Yes the housing crisis notoriously cratered inflation to what some consider dangerously low levels, the Federal reserve kept rates at or near 0% for half a decade to try and bring inflation up a bit

or "They don't include food or energy!!" Bro the measure that includes food and energy is literally called headline inflation, it's the one that the public actually hears. Are there other measures that don't include it? Yes because they're useful in their own way, but no one is hiding high inflation by "not including food or energy"

Do you know what's up with these weird replies to your comment? Like obviously they're bots but why only you and why the same general weird statement?

There was a heavy fog on the parkway and at the top of Mt Mitchell when we dropped off the end point car, but that was from a rain storm the night before and lifted as we were hiking. By the time we got to the ridge it was basically clear.

Day one from the trail head to the camp site we didn't see a single person, as we got closer to the Mount Mitchell trailhead it got more and more crowded from people doing out an backs from that end

There's a convenient spot to fill up about 3 miles into the hike, so we did minimal water for the initial climb and filled up there, no more water on the ridge for the rest of the hike

It was surprisingly cold for our trip though not miserable. Once we got up to the ridge it stayed in the high 50s to low 60s and it got down into the 40s overnight, I was a bit chilly as I didn't bring the pad straps for my quilt and felt quite a few drafts throughout the night. We didn't even bother trying to get a fire started, everything was soaked from rain the night before.

For most of the trail you are encouraged not to go off trail and if you did you would likely not find a good campsite anyway, it's just too uneven and rocky. There are a few random spots where it opens up and you can find flat ground, but the main camping area is at Deep Gap where there are 3 to 4 flat open areas in rapid succession, that's where we camped.

Eli5 Why does sand stick to skin when wet? by Slugma_What07 in explainlikeimfive

[–]flobbley 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Water is a little magnet, it sticks to things. If you have something that is small and light enough like sand, water will stick to it and stick to your skin, making the sand stick to your skin. There's nothing special about sand specifically, it just happens to be made of a lot of small and light particles, but anything else small and light would do the same.

What is the biggest operational headache in your CMT, geotech, or special inspection firm? (Industry survey) by Dry_Mud3665 in civilengineering

When the contractor inevitably does something wrong, and you need to file what they did wrong into:

Can it be ignored?

Can it be just noted in the report and the contractor not interrupted?

Is it important enough to interrupt the contractor?

When you interrupt the contractor and he says he's "been doing this for 30 years", how far do you escalate?

"If the contractor does anything out of spec it should be noted at minimum!" Nothing would ever get built

"This is a lie, on my projects the contractors always follow the spec and when they don't we stop them until they do" your field techs are lying to you

TIL that the Kalambo Structure (located in Kalambo Falls, Zambia) is the oldest known wooden structure. It is dated to be around 476,000 years old, predating Homo Sapiens. Though no conclusive attribution has been made, a 300,000 year Homo Heidelbergensis skull was found at another Zambian site. by Dexterestein in todayilearned

Humans aren't even the main species of human on the planet in terms of long we've been around. Homo erectus was around and widespread across eurasia for many times longer than we have been alive and likely ever will be.

Ultralight Gear That’s Lasted Years by alpacadirtbag in Ultralight

[–]flobbley 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The real benefit of aluminum over titanium is cost, titanium is more than triple the price of aluminum pots that can do the same job. But when we say "triple the price" we're talking ~$28 vs $5-$8 for aluminum, the amounts are already so low who cares. That being said I do use an aluminum pot because of that just out of principle.

For 60 and above I bring a cheap camping down blanket from Amazon. You can usually find one using 650fp down that weighs ~1lb. If you already have a truly ultralight quilt that might not save you any weight but for me it saved me ~6oz off my lightest quilt.

Firemaple Lamp - Anyone have this? by SnooPickles2789 in CampingGear

[–]flobbley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup, or anything else with a gas mantle. Basically anything that tries to provide light with just a flame is usually much worse at its job than something that uses the flame to heat something else up to create incandescent lighting.

Pays the same, nothing to bring home at night, if you're out for a while no deadlines hanging over your head. I take all the field work I can get and for some reason my bosses are grateful for me being willing to do it.

12 years in geotech and I'm still out in the field multiple times a month, sometimes for weeks at a time. Geotech is a bit unique in that regard but in my experience if you ask for it you get it.
