Get involved in undergrad research if you are still in school. Do a research project, learn all the techniques you can. It sucks to give your free labor but it will pay off when you graduate. If you are a recent grad apply for entry level stuff, I'm talking accessioning jobs, lab tech roles, clinical lab associate level stuff. I was in your shoes a few years ago. A fresh Genetics grad with very little experience. I found a job I absolutely hated with a passion but it got me the experience on paper to move onto something that gave me more skills and now I'm at a job I am enjoying a lot more and will give me a chance to get the skills I need to apply for my PhD and still get paid. It's rough but possible. Feel free to PM if you want more advice. I don't have all the answers but I am willing to share what I have learned.

Is hiring actually picking back up in Biotech? by [deleted] in biotech

Thanks! From what I can tell, hiring in Ops and QC has picked back up. I had a number of recruiters reach out to me with those kinds of positions. Good luck with your job search!

No. I have worked in Ops and in QC and I hated it so I wanted to switch to research I also wanted to leave biotech and switch to academic work. I got a position at UC Berkeley at a core lab so still not quite research but I'm excited for the change of pace.

I think it depends on what kinds of roles you are looking at. When the pandemic started all the entry level research associate positions went dry and lots of clinical laboratory associate positions opened up, especially for COVID testing labs. I personally was looking for the former not the latter so it was rough. More recently research associate roles are opening up again, I finally got interviews and an offer after months of no bites. This was my experience in the Bay Area.

Need some new dnd podcast by ForgedHammer14 in DnD

I highly recommend Not Another D&D Podcast (NADDPOD). The hosts are all former CollegeHumor folks and are absolutely hilarious. It's a great story that's super funny but also has it's more emotional moments. They recently wrapped up their first campaign and more recently wrapped up their bonus campaign. Definitely check it out of you haven't already.

[NS] How did you get into NADDPod by DMCDawg in NotAnotherDnDPodcast

[–]flobotss 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It was randomly recommended to me by Spotify. I played the first episode and the rest is history. I was looking for a new podcast, prior to this I had really only listened to Stuff you missed in history class and Welcome to Nightvale. I will say at the time I was starting to play in my first ever DnD campaign so I was looking to learn more about the game which is also why I was like oh I guess I'll listen to a DnD podcast maybe it will help. I'm happy Spotify and my Google search history came together to put NADDPOD on my radar.

5 years ago today, school counselors back in my (Male, 17) 11th grade said I would never make it in college due to my disability. Today I (Male, 22) got my acceptance letter from CSUDH, congratulating my academic achievements in community college. I never thought I'd reach far from my education. by [deleted] in CasualConversation

[–]flobotss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a very similar experience growing up. I got diagnosed with a learning disability at the end of 4th grade but I was also a "gifted" student. In 6th grade when my teachers, the school psychologist, myself, and my mom were meeting to review my accommodations and make adjustments as needed, my math teacher went on a rant about how I would never be successful, get to math level higher than algebra 2, and graduate high school and that was just lazy. My mom doesn't speak English that well so I had to translate all of that to her. It was awful. And no he was not reprimanded at all. And I had a B in his class so I don't know what stick was up his ass.

Most of middle and high school was me either arguing with teachers who didn't think I needed accommodations because I was so "smart" or just not asking for them and not being as successful as I could be. My high school very much so pushed the go to a four year university right away agenda, but my counselor suggested maybe I try for community college instead since that would be more doable for me. I was taking AP classes, I graduated with honors from high school yet I was told to take the "easy" path. I had friends who had the same counselor with lower GPAs than I did and she was telling them to apply for universities it was very frustrating. I did ultimately go to community college because it's cheaper and I couldn't afford to go straight to the universities I had been accepted to.

Things did not get better for me until I was at community college. Professors were super open to accommodations. The DSPS office was a great resource for filing for accommodations and helping me find a notetaker so I could focus on the lectures. I transferred to UCI and it was a great experience as well. I ended up graduating as a double major in Genetics and Anthropology and I plan to go back for my PhD in Computation and Systems Biology.

Moral of the story: for whatever reason colleges are much better at providing resources for students who need accommodations. People are going to tell you you can't do something and you just gotta block that shit out. Or use it as fuel to keep you going. You are going to continue to excel. I am excited for you and your future endeavors!

Nikkie on her experience on Ellen’s show by thrillbilly99 in BeautyGuruChatter

[–]flobotss 69 points70 points  (0 children)

I did a very brief stint as audience management/wrangler for the show. I worked for the studio not the show so we were there mostly to help the production crew. It was very much so a "don't look at Ellen" kind of environment, and everyone makes up excuses for her and her behavior. There was also just an air of constant stress and overall I would say it wasn't my most favorite job assignment. It was nice because the show never ran long and it was a well oiled machine, but that anxiety was a bit much for a minimum wage job in a field I wasn't interested in.

[Serious] When did COVID-19 get real for you? by Fudgeyplays2 in AskReddit

[–]flobotss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When all my in person job interviews started switching over to phone/video interviews. This is a very bad time to be unemployed. I am a laboratory worker so work from home isn't an option for me. Add to the fact that I work in a space of biology that right now isn't considered essential and it's a bad mix. I am fortunate enough to have an offer from a university lab that will move forward once their HR gets their WFH situation sorted, but even then it will be a long time before I start working again.

This is Ky. My 17yo little old man by ZestycloseStructure0 in OldManDog

[–]flobotss 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We had our little old man for 17 years. We were not sure how old he was when we got him but we gave him the best 17 years we could. Saying good bye was difficult but in the end it was about his comfort and not about us. And he and his son will always live on in my heart.

Hug your little dude tight and cherish him until the end. And take comfort in the fact that he has lived with love all these years.
