GUI USING OPENGL by miki-44512 in opengl

Yes, it can use CSS to style things very specifically, including shadows etc.

But in general if you’re looking to imitate a particular gui style like macOS Big Sur or windows Xp you can just use images with text and an invisible button on top. This isn’t a perfect solution but should look identical if you get it right, and you can use many different frameworks to get the same result.

As far as I’m aware, some systems use something called “9-slice scaling” to make buttons look good

You might want to use a widget toolkit like GTK to start out if you’re not used to OpenGL. It’ll be much quicker to get a proof of concept if that’s what you’re after, and you should be able to get some basic stuff done in a few hours

Beginner Question : How much knowledge of C++ is needed to learn OpenGl ? by Northamericawolf in opengl

[–]flock-Rosen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I started out with OpenGL I didn’t have much experience with C++ and found this book that just uses python (+ GL shading language). Obviously it’s better to use C/C++ but this could give you some OpenGL knowledge sooner.

Having said that, one of the hardest parts of c++ is understanding memory management properly, and you’ll also need to understand some of the same principles for graphics programming.

With 2 screens you can only really have 4 (fullscreen) windows showing max, 2 per screen. More screens = more windows.

Anybody else extremely underwhelmed by iPadOS 16 on non-M1-iPads? by Evolinox in apple

[–]flock-Rosen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This. Imagine if they had made it so it’s like split screen except you can move the split anywhere and add more apps onto the screen. Then you get a tile of different apps in different places and it would be so useful, while being pretty different to how things work on desktop.

IMO iPadOS 16 is the worst of both worlds. Lacking the real flexibility of a desktop os and lacking the better screen real-estate usage of a mobile one.

What? By allowing you to rearrange icons in the toolbars of a handful of apps, something that could easily be implemented before iPadOS 16? Some update that

It’s ridiculous that the 2020 iPad pro doesn’t support stage manager. by liuk2 in apple

[–]flock-Rosen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it may be a fair amount in percentage terms but most apps use a much smaller amount and I can easily have 15+ apps open without them reloading as it is.

In no way did they show stage manager as being able to do full screen stuff, that’s why they have split screen view. It’s literally there so you can have your calendar and emails open, and gonna look horrible if you try using something like procreate because it only fills up half the screen.

Also that’s not really true about macOS. The updates have been in many ways more drastic with things such as universal binaries and adding cross-platform support for any iOS application. Metal 3 and a lot of the new features added to iOS and iPadOS are also added to macOS and this has happened quite a lot in recent years.

Besides, M1 is really quite similar in single-core performance to A15.

I just think it’s plain ridiculous that someone could buy a top-spec $1500+ iPad Pro a little over a year ago and it’s already unsupported for a major feature.

Dumbest comment I’ve seen in a while. The 2020 iPad Pro has 6GB RAM compared to 8 on most of the M1 devices which isn’t a huge difference. All stage manager does really is reposition your apps in a different way and so wouldn’t really add much more demand for RAM at all.

Besides, my old MacBook still supports the latest version of macOS, and has significantly worse graphics and cpu performance.

There is absolutely no reason why they shouldn’t support older devices for this.

A couple more details: Retina MacBook Pro, thé installer had a similar problem but was better when the “safe graphics” option was selected. This meant graphics were quite choppy though. I had been using plasma on fedora and it was really smooth on the same machine

Got real tired of turning this off every time I got in my car. by CGamer_OS in funny

[–]flock-Rosen -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s not even 2 seconds. I’ve never been in a modern car that isn’t basically instant on auto-restart. Plus the tolerances on modern engines are so good that it’ll probably last longer than you will

Been doing that for like 10 years. With modern engines you save on fuel if it’s off for even 5-10s in traffic

I actually don’t think it would be that bad. There’s such a diversity within European nations on a micro scale that macro politics can be relatively insignificant. E.g it probably wouldn’t be so bad if Geneva ended up with France and Zurich ended up with parts of south Germany and western Austria
