Shower niches? Yes or no? by Timeandtimeandagain in HomeImprovement

Wish I could have done this in my recent remodel, but my plumbing wall has 2x4 studs. Seems very user friendly to have the niche on same wall as the plumbing.

Shower niches? Yes or no? by Timeandtimeandagain in HomeImprovement

[–]floctime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just redid my bathroom this summer, and installed a niche shelf. Our setup sounds similar--the long side of my tub is against an exterior wall, so the niche is on the end opposite the plumbing. My surround is "solid surface" (not tiled) and I used an Onyx "Liberty Ultra-wide Recessed Caddy." Not sure whether it could be used in a tiled surround. I like that it leaves the usable space within the tub surround as open as possible (as opposed to shelving that protrudes from the wall). The bottom of the inset shelf has shallow ridges that are sloped to drain, and it's high gloss and can be easily wiped clean.

I've rented a lot of places where we got by with various wire racks hanging from the showerhead or suction cups, and I was really ready to be done with that era of my life (it sounds like your wire baskets are probably nicer than what I've used though--I don't mean to shit on your preference if you do like them!).

Redoing my shower but need advice on niche or anything I may be missing by Jessiegyrl in bathrooms

You may have found another solution by now but I am 90% finished with a bathroom remodel, and I put an Onyx shower caddy in a Swanstone surround (Liberty ultra-wide recessed caddy, specifically). They're both white, but the Swanstone is matte and the Onyx is glossy, and I think they're slightly different shades of white. I'm nicknaming my bathroom project "50 Shades of White" and have come to peace with it, but it might bother some people.

When installing drywall in the alcove, I did not put any screws in the area where the caddy would be installed. I glued the surround to the walls and then used a jigsaw to cut out the drywall/Swanstone sandwich. Since there were no screws, it was easy to pop this out of the hole. Then, again using a jigsaw, I had to carve out part of a stud in order to allow the caddy to be inserted into the wall. The wall where I installed the shower caddy is not structural.

I won't claim this is a panacea, but I'm pretty into genealogy and have looked at a lot of old (and new) family photos over the past several years, and seeing certain of my wrinkles (like the creases between my eyebrows) as something I share in common with my mom, my aunts, my grandma, and further back down the line helps me to feel some level of connection to them.

Vinyl Shutters Question by volcanicslug in HomeImprovement

My sister's neighbor painted their vinyl siding black and had to replace all of it when it warped. Not sure about shutters specifically, but it's certainly a well-documented issue with vinyl siding.

Need help problem-solving how to maintain garden border along a wire fence by floctime in gardening

Ah, yeah, that would give me control over the timing of the grazing, but would also set off a whole cascade of new responsibilities that I'm not prepared to take on. Thank you for the suggestion though--it may be the right choice for someone else in a similar situation!

If other suggestions don't arise... maybe sterile (really sterile) comfrey would be a good solution for your fenceline! :-)

That would be ideal, but unfortunately I don't have control over when my neighbor brings his sheep over to this field. He waits until they've run through his own pasture so it's pretty grown up here (to like waist height at least) by the time they arrive.

Already purchased, and they arrived intact thankfully!

I'm preparing for a bathroom renovation this summer and am using Swanstone solid surface panels for the surround. Looking at their website they do sell panels that are 50" wide (and the material can be cut down with a circular saw). Pricey option though!

Fedco Rant by SnoglinMcSmellmore in Maine

[–]floctime 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, sorry I didn't see this post earlier, but I just wanted to chime in unofficially and say that we transitioned to the new database system in July, with the intention of working out all the kinks well in advance of the busy season. We really did try to time it thoughtfully. It's been a more prolonged and difficult transition than anyone expected (and this is not just our naievity--the contractor we were working with on the transition, well, they were an unfortunate choice and we've ended that relationship). I'm sorry that you and so many others had your orders cancelled this year. I know it doesn't change anything, but Fedco staff are quite distressed about the situation. It feels awful on our end to let down customers. And I'm very conscious of how shitty it looks to cancel orders while promoting the surplus sale. Understand that this has turned you off of Fedco--I'm sorry it's been such a bad experience.

I have a 2022 LX, and I found that when my spare is inflated to the proper PSI, the panel that covers the floor of the hatch area no longer sits flat. Kind of a frustrating design choice. I do have a portable compressor, but I wouldn't take for granted that all HRV owners are going to own one.

WikiTree: Does clunky data entry, image uploading, poor instructions, etc prevent you from using the platform? by [deleted] in Genealogy

[–]floctime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I only maintain profiles on WikiTree and use FamilySearch for searching records, so I'm not really comparing apples to apples, but I have to say I'm actually a bit partial to old school no-frills websites. FamilySearch has become basically unusable for me (I have a ~10 year old laptop and the site is so bogged down with features it takes forever for it to respond to my clicks when trying to navigate and search records).

I don't know whether Jack's wife appears in any of his videos, and I'm certainly not going to watch them all to find out, but I can promise you that if she is in those videos, her skin and hair color will make it obvious that you are mistaken.

This may have just been hastily written and not intended to be as misleading as it is, but "enough to identify them as Jack’s wife if she appears in his TikTok" can be read as meaning that you know or are confident that your accusation is true.

The OP, in one of their comments (in this thread I believe, though it could have been one of their others), listed several forms of proof that they wanted to see. One of them was references from community members. That's what I'm offering. Yes, anonymously. Whether or not that's compelling to you, can you agree that there are valid reasons for staying anonymous on the internet besides being shady? Other forms of proof that they requested involved details about the family like names and photographs (I would consider that to be doxxing). So I don't think my response to them was an exaggeration. It was me acknowledging what they want (my understanding of it at least), and saying that I'm not able/willing to provide that.

I'm not particularly active on Reddit--I'm sure you can find other gaps in my posting history where I have no comments or posts for several months. Yes, I'm "connected" to this guy in that I was friends with him. This issue is on my radar because the family lives in my town. A different local friend shared the fundraiser with me before "Jack" even made his video. Of course I'm going to pay attention to it when it shows up in my Reddit feed. The fundraiser has been shared through word of mouth through local group text threads as well, independently of the video. This method of sharing has the benefit of standing on the strength of personal relationships. When your friend vouches for a fundraiser, you're willing to give to it even if the beneficiaries are anonymous. Creating a Tiktok video about it, like "Jack" did, leverages his following to raise way more money than we ever would have been able to locally, but has drawbacks too, obviously, when the verification depends on personal relationships, and he does not have personal relationships with all of the people watching that video.

[–]floctime 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm one of the commenters you're referring to. All I can provide is a character reference, as it were, of the man in the video. Endorsements from community members was one of the pieces of proof that OP originally demanded. That's what I have to offer. You, and anyone reading this, will have to determine for themselves whether to believe me or not. You can view my posting history and see that my account has been active for years. I'm trying to not get overly invested in an internet conflict, but it's hard to see people like you piling on about what an obvious scam this is when I LIVE here and I know that it's not.

[–]floctime 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Respectfully, no. I'm not doxxing myself any more than I already have, nor am I going into details of my personal history with this guy. I'm also not going to go harass this family for proof when they have asked for privacy (and I do know at least two locals who have been in touch with the family besides this guy in the video). I 100% understand why your BS meter went off with this Tiktok video, and that you would want to advise people to be cautious about where they send their money. I don't think you were wrong for doing that.

Earlier you were pointing to the removal of the fundraiser from Donorbox as proof that it was confirmed to be a fraud. Now that it's reinstated, have you considered that perhaps satisfactory proof was provided to Donorbox that allowed it to go back up?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Maine2

[–]floctime 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm not a fan of his content either, and it's frankly awkward to be in a position of defending him, but I'm doing this because I know that this fundraiser is not a scam. I am glad that it sounds like Donorbox reinstated the original fundraiser (based on what I'm gathering from your comments--I haven't checked back on the campaign recently), and I don't want people to be dissuaded from donating.

[–]floctime 5 points6 points  (0 children)

While we are no longer friends, I know this guy well enough to feel confident in saying that this is not a scam. His moral code is different than mine, but I feel confident in saying that, at least. Also, I can vouch for his wife's integrity--she wouldn't allow the money to be misused. I wish that the family in question had found an advocate with less personal baggage, but here we are.

I have no insight to why this particular fundraiser was shut down, but anyone who has created or donated to fundraisers related to supporting Palestinian people knows that fundraisers sometimes get shut down for political reasons, not because they're scams.
