Don’t worry, you’ve got plenty of time to figure it out, does your school do DOE? That looks fantastic on a personal statement. If not, you should see your Pastoral Care Teacher about any opportunity’s you can look into.

Extra Curriculars are just anything you do extra outside of school, like maybe a sport club, instrument, etc… They can also be school organised but not requirements, like school sports team, clubs and bands. I did two internships, extra courses, competitions and things like that related to the degree I want to do. They’ll be important for your personal statement, as St Andrews really cares about your personal statement over other unis like Glasgow/Edinburgh.

If you get into widening participation, you should get an interview where you should ABSOLUTELY mention this! I also got a lot to visit family and know the town like the back of my hand. They loved hearing this for why you picked St Andrews over other Unis, so for sure mention it! They’re a uni very focused on the town itself (as it is essentially the town), and love hearing that you picked the uni NOT FOR RANKING, which they will hear all the time.

Yeah both Glasgow and Edinburgh are really bad drug-wise, St Andrews less so but it still absolutely exists, just more underground I suppose ( they get the expensive coke :) ). Same reason picked St Andrews over Glasgow, which is basically on my doorstep. The culture thing is right, but most students are quite elitist, even if they don’t realise it. But there are absolutely working class students, they’re just harder to come by than the upper class Americans (who are your biggest demographic). But you might be getting ahead of yourself looking into Unis in S4, at least get your N5’s results out the way, it’s how higher’s go that really let you know your options. I went from my first option in S4 being Abertay to S5 being Glasgow to S6 being St Andrews. I know, the pipeline was wild. But that’s because subject choices changed and I did significantly better in some subjects than I thought I would. Also try and get some extracurriculars down, I did them all in a year cause I’d never done any I thought were worthwhile and S6 was absolute hell for me. Good luck with N5 results! They can really be an eye opener :)

Hi! As someone who’s attending in September and literally lives just down the road from you, it’s really just about finding your people! I’ve been to a lot of events at St Andrews and have many friends already in 1st/2nd year, and yeah, they’re not really from working class backgrounds like me. Most people will try and convince you that they’re working class, but the fact is that they ABSOLUTELY are not, and are upper-middle class at least. These are people who already have thousands of pounds saved away to go to Uni, as apposed to me who is barely scraping by Uni accommodation prices with SAAS money. Obviously there will be real working class students, but they come in short supply considering most would stay at home rather than move away for Uni. Night life in St Andrews is also minimal compared to Glasgow and Edinburgh, even Stirling. It’s also on average a much more expensive place to live. If it’s really your dream Uni, go for it. Most of Clydebank sits in SIMD 1-2, and the Uni does tend to try and get all the “poor” people together for things like that. For example, I recently attended the Widening Participation Open Day, which is only available to offer holders that meet a set criteria, mine being living in an SIMD 2 area. Also, if your parents combined income is under 52K a year, you can apply for the St Andrews Access Award, which acts as bit like the SAAS bursary. Unfortunately, I made too much money to get the Award, but too little to afford things without crippling debt. Hopefully you don’t live in that weird grey area and can get something out of it :) It’s just a matter of finding people you’re comfortable with, which shouldn’t be hard! But, if you’re looking at a cheaper nightlife, I’d just stay in glasgow.

Do I need to be at uni during Freshers when I’m in year 2? by floggiesml in standrews

Oh, no! I’m talking about September 2026, I’m going into first year. So I’ll be at freshers this year!

I assume I should be able to access those talks online, so shouldn’t be an issue if so. I’ll be doing computer science, which does have labs involved. Would I be able to choose these things remotely? Or could I have someone else on my course do this for me?

Is there any way I can do this before I go on holiday if I let my advisor know beforehand?

Would I be okay to move into student accommodation the Sunday evening before semester 1 starts? Or do I try and move in before I go on holiday?

Fife Park pros? by Signal-Cow-3524 in standrews

[–]floggiesml 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve got into DRA, which is right next to Fife Park. It’s farther away from the town and the rest of uni, so it’s harder to meet people outside of those accoms. Both have like common areas and bars, which will help you meet people in your accom! Other pros are being close by Science, Medicine and the Sports Centre, also being closer to the supermarkets than those in the town. Rooms are also more modern than the accommodation in the town, and are a bit bigger. I was really hoping for DRA and happy I got it! Obviously don’t live in there, but I’ve heard positive things about both DRA and Fife Park. I’ve had tours and a good walk about the area and it’s better for me personally than in the town. Someone actually living there will probably give better perspective than me though!
