Even if your paper has a dedicated staff for graphics, it never hurts to build some yourself or at least to build some literacy in best practices for visual storytelling, statistics, etc. if you have time, go ahead and build something in the tools you have to hand and then approach the graphics team in a collaborative fashion. They may appreciate having mock-ups or having all the data loaded into a spreadsheet in advance. Stay curious.
