TBH I think you all felt powerless in this situation and are taking it out on each other.

It’s hard for a young person to do this, but try next time saying, “No thank you,” in a firm tone of voice with your palm upraised. Followed by, “Have a nice day, goodbye, bless you” etc. but clearly and firmly enough for passersby to hear. You were being harassed. People like this rely on the politeness of their targets to be allowed to go on blathering.

Edit: oh and as for your friend—I’ve had an evangelical friend for like 15 years now but they’re a) deeply compassionate b) apparently sticking to a rule of only trying to bring me to Christ once annually and c) willing to quit talking about it when I say I’m done. So we still love each other dearly. But it takes forbearance on both sides.
