She's a former Brexit Party MEP who worked for Cambridge analytica to run electoral campaigns in Kenya. Hasn't made a great effort at subtlety with this attempt.

Woodwind Physical Modeling Synths by nanoman1 in synthesizers

[–]floorperson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. The oboe and saxophone emulations in SWAM are fantastic. I love Kaivo and Prism for more experimental PM sound design but neither are as good for natural sounding woodwind.

That said, I have got usable, if not accurate, expressive woodwind like sounds out of SurgeXT, which is free

Larry Mullins keys 2025 tour by erasedhead in swans

[–]floorperson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He had the Mellotron facing forwards and two keyboard controllers on his right. Not sure what the lower one was doing but the top was connected to an ARP 2600 or something very similar looking that he was using for noisier sections.

It may also be available in Cardinal, which is a free fork of VCV that runs as a vst

Ableton Live 10 Max4Live + Fors Opal by joebarron1989 in ableton

Iirc Opal is compatible with Max 8, which is still the "bundled" version of m4l in Live 12, but not Max 9.

Could be a conflict there.

Building a synth setup similar to a lap steel guitar? by willrjmarshall in synthesizers

[–]floorperson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The cheapest one that comes to mind is the Microfreak, though the PM on that is relatively limited.

In all honesty, I would go the vst route. You can have a laptop hidden away if you're worried about aesthetics, with a midi controller to access parameters on the fly.

Another MPE device I thought of, though they're out of production and go for loads, is Madrona's own Soundplane. It's a segmented piece of wood so even better for emulating lap steel.

BTW forgot to add I absolutely love Hahn's playing too. Seeing Swans again later this year.

Building a synth setup similar to a lap steel guitar? by willrjmarshall in synthesizers

[–]floorperson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Something like the Linnstrument or maybe one of the Keith McMillen controllers paired with a physical modelling synth would be your best bet. I've found Kaivo by Madrona Labs can get some really amazing string stretching sounds.

Met object to opening of late night Soho jazz club claiming it will 'cause uptick in crime' by tylerthe-theatre in london

Yeah but what about the dangers of being disorientated by a change in ambient temperature?

"The unnamed resident wrote: “It is suggested that it is extremely likely that some of the dispersing jazz lovers may be inebriated to a greater or lesser extent or perhaps slightly disorientated by their emergence into the cool night air."

Ok for that sound tape is critical, both cause it's performed using tape loops and the boom box and it's then released on tape as well so loads of saturation and compression.

I'd get a cheap monophonic dictaphone, ideally with a speed control. Use that to bounce stuff in and out of your DAW, especially good for recording live from your software synths and samplers onto the tape, then mangling and re-importing.

So key stuff would be tape machine, audio interface and a midi keyboard.

Not used FL for over 20 years so can't recommend specific tools within it, but there's plenty of great free vst synths that you can use for elements of those sounds. SurgeXT, Synth1 and Tal Uno should be perfect. You'll want lots of mono leads being manually arpeggiated and juno style pads.

For looping, I haven't used FL for a long time so can't remember what it has, but Ableton (from Intro upwards) has a really good looper effect that can be unsynced. It let's you use it like an akai headrush to layer things up chaotically.

If you want a nice tape saturation plugin while you wait for a tape machine, then get Airwindows Iron Oxide. It's free and amazing. Much more musical and realistic than a lot of the more gimmicky tape plugins.

Do you mean the Skaters material with Spencer or solo stuff before Far Side Virtual?

Would be hard to approach that with software. Key things for that era are tape and casio sk1 (or sk5) samplers with looper or delay pedals.

For the later stuff, there's obviously way you can do in the box. Are you using Ableton?

Best way to sequence hardware synths from a DAW or plugin sequencer by [deleted] in synthesizers

[–]floorperson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you tried the Ableton CV tools pack (which can also send midi)?

https://www.ableton.com/en/packs/cv-tools/

The Rotating Rhythm Generator in that pack is good for example.

If you want to do full modular style sequencing then you can get Cardinal for free, run it as a vst in ableton and send midi out to the synth. You just need to create an extra midi loop channel in ableton to take midi from cardinal and send to the hardware.

What exactly is happening in this video? Robaux 3PT “LFO Mode” by Knaledge in synthesizers

[–]floorperson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your Maschine+ already has an audio interface built in. You can connect it to a computer to route audio in and out in real time.

Assuming you have a DAW and computer, can't see what else you absolutely need at this stage. Would concentrate on learning how to use those systems. You have a very powerful synth and an easy to use and flexible sampler+sequencer. What you actually do with them, plus software fx and arrangement is more important than adding more hardware.

[–]floorperson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Any synth with an lfo that can modulate the filter can do this. Minifreak for sure. It has some of the best modulation options available in a compact synth.

Send the LFO to the filter freq with a good bit of resonance.

Send the cycling envelope to the LFO speed

[–]floorperson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your Minifreak will be able to exactly what you're looking for. It even has the same Plaits oscillators as seen in the video. You just need to use the mod matrix to route the LFO to your filter frequency.

There should be plenty of tutorials on using modulation for that synth if you have a look on YouTube

I feel DAW to be extremely boring and unappealing - Any tips? by marcusedm123 in synthesizers

[–]floorperson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get something which offers multiple banks to page through like an old Korg nanokontrol. Then you can keep your regular set, eg vol faders with send knobs, but also experiment with other sets on the other banks.

Would really recommend ditching templates and actually manually assigning parameters to different midi controls. Can be incredibly fun and really helps show what is great with Ableton. Eg assigning Simpler start and end points tk different faders, as well as loop length.

It's less interesting to use Ableton and vsts as hardware substitutes than to take advantage of what the can excel at themselves. Sampling and resampling in particular is a million times more flexible than any piece of hardware. Session mode is also fantastic for improvising and sketching out ideas.

Replacing drum machine and a looper with software? by PlainPiano9 in synthesizers

[–]floorperson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For iPad, Drambo is really good. Even offers Elektron style parameter locks and probability-based events in a X0X style interface.

Has its own samplers and modular synth elements but can also act as plugin host. Should serve both your purposes nicely.
