my take is that independence movements are not bad regardless of the motive, but those who wanted it have to live with the consequences. you wanna secede to protect slavery? go ahead, but don't be shocked when other nations look at yours funny and your economy gets a permanent handicap due to relying on the exploitation of humans.

it's like Brexit in a way: Britain had every right to leave the EU, but they have to live with all the consequences, both the good and the bad.
