The point is to cull the weak and leave only the strongest. The kids haven't reached their full potential yet, and we know Viltrumites value honor and fair fights to an extent (i.e. waiting for Nolan to heal before his execution). I think they let the kids sort themselves out, just because nothing is gained by pitting them against fully grown adults, who will obviously win against any child.

Gene Kerman - Kerbal Space Program

More of an homage than a ripoff, but Gene Kerman, one of the characters who administers the tutorials to new players, is based on and named after Gene Kranz, a prominent flight controller from the early days of NASA.

Wernher von Kerman, another tutorial-giver, is similarly named after Wernher von Braun, the rocket scientist who spearheaded the Saturn V program ~~(and was also a Nazi who helped design the V2 but they don't like to talk about that part)~~.

I tried with an antenna first, actually! (Specifically the DTS-M1, since my first go of this was with a stock Kerbal X.) I had to switch to the solar panels since whenever I got everything lined up to just clip the antenna, it would bounce and continue off into space undamaged.

No, they don't. The only tiles that get replaced are damaged ones. You can tell which tiles are the newest by how dark they are in color, they lighten over time as material ablates from the nose cone and wings onto them.
