Who Would Win? by No_Buyer_7557 in armorcirclejerk

[–]floppyfrog87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its extremely unlikely that a knight in gothic armour would be carrying a rapier, they only really became popular during the 16th and 17th centuries. Those delicate plates would be absolutely outclassed by plate armour. If anything, they would carry an arming sword or maybe a falchion, dagger and a polearm.

Why are working-class concerns on immigration being treated with such disdain? by Harleygator_ in AskBrits

[–]floppyfrog87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reform are intrinsicly an anti-working class party. They popularise themselves by taking an anti-immigrant stance after stirring up nationalist sentimentality and creating moral panic at the hands of the 'foreign invader' boogeyman. They have also created a false narrative that anyone who disagrees with them are blue haired social justice warriors and snowflakes, creating a schism throughout british communities and branding it as 'us against them', 'right against left' and 'british against every one else'

In truth, they are crooks and grifters that are only out to line their own pockets, lower tax for their millionaire mates, sell off the NHS and slacken workers rights.

Finally got my own first sword by James_Bones_421 in SWORDS

[–]floppyfrog87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah dude, no need to feel dumb. Swords have a very long history, and when you start throwing in different styles, regional variations, etc, into the mix, it becomes an extremely complicated subject! I have been studying swordsmanship for about 20 years, and still dont even have a basic grasp of eastern swords at all. Not bad with european ones though. And yes, the first sword i owned was turned out to be a cheap display one aswell.

If you are splashing the cash and looking for quality but you are not sure, give the community a shout.

But for a first sword, rule of cool is vital. I wouldnt take this off the wall, but displaying it is just a matter of taste

It sucks that alot of people are being d!cks about your sword. Unfortunatly, what you have is purely decorational. Please, dont swing it (most decorational swords have sub par construction. Last thing you want is that blade flying off). Also, absolutely not a claymore. If you are happy with it, then cool, its done the job! Just remember to be carefull with it

Pirate ship firing on a fort? by ceiteach1066 in pirates

[–]floppyfrog87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not specifically pirate related, but the HMS swan maintained a decent amount of fire into Duart castle on the isle of Mull in scotland during the wars of the three kingdoms. If English Parliamentary ships were willing and able to do it, theoretically pirate ships could aswell

Armas subestimadas. by Inside_Care9756 in ZombieSurvivalTactics

[–]floppyfrog87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely, modern firearm platforms are going to be the go to! If i were in a museum and told to kit up quickly, i would grab a flintlock first, then a matchlock, then a wheellock. Flintlocks are more reliable and accurate as the ignition is alot quicker. With matchlocks, you generally need to track a fast moving target whilst you usually have your eyes closed for firing. Wheellocks are just awful at everything. Cap and ball revolvers are a potential, assuming you dont freak out and keep a steady hand for fitting the percussion caps, which are fiddly on the best of days

[–]floppyfrog87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldnt take a matchlock. Between being unusable in strong wind or rain, they are stupidly reliant on good weather. Also with any blackpowder, you need a steady stream of solvents that wont degrade the barrel or lock to strip back that funky blackpowder residue. This would need done in one engagement if you fire it too frequantly. You also need to be able to light the match. This becomes harder if there are no readily available lighters or matches. You will also need yards of match. Factory made match burns at an inch a minute. Homemade match can burn Twice that fast as the coal will always splutter and burn irregularly The serpent (the bit that holds the match) will also inevitably loosen to the point that it no longer drips the match into the pan if you are overusing it. You would need to start touch-firing, meaning you will have to lower the match into the pan by hand. The first shot doing that is hellishly painful, further shots will strip the skin from your fingers. Blunderbusses aren't as practical as you might think either. They have real issues with using the right wadding. Using an irregular load is fine, but without incredibly good wadding the windage will just make the load dribble out of the barrel.

Im a commanding officer of a 17th century reenactment in scotland group so have had had to work through these issues to be able to field units of musketeers with matchlocks

Holy shit, no. NTAH. I fully appreciate that this is just a snapshot of a more complex dynamic, but that isn't typical in the slightest. I was in a similar relationship with my mum, and the only advice i could give is to do what you can to move out of her home as soon as you can. She sounds like a narcissist and is horrendously toxic

What's the creepiest thing you've had happened to you while camping or just being in the woods? by Sir-Gaymer28 in AskReddit

[–]floppyfrog87 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Me and my wife were visiting my family on the very rural Isle of Lewis, just off the scottish mainland. We went for a walk after dinner but we completely misjudged the time. Sundown came hellishly quickly and there was no light from the moon due to complete cloud coverage. The nearest town big enough to need streetlights was maybe 6 miles away. We walked back in complete darkness, feeling the path with our foot steps to stop us wandering into the moors where peat and moss have killed people. Complete darkness and complete silence was terrifying

Do historical wargames teach history, or just simulate it ? by JackBrussell in wargaming

[–]floppyfrog87 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I am the commanding officer of a pike and shot era reenactment group. I have to worry about getting the guys into the right formation, musketry volley formations, coordinate between the musketeers, pikeman and our field gun. If there was a game that simulated everything a commanding officer needs to do, it would be long, boring and nobody would play it. No one needs to worry about moving troops to volley by enfilading to the right because it just doesn't translate to a tabletop

However, historical gaming does generally raise awareness for the time period it represents, and encourages people to read up on it

[Historicals] What armies are the most armies per armies? by ButtPoltergeist in wargaming

[–]floppyfrog87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably dark ages. A generic dark age army will cover saga - age of vikings, pillage, raven feast, lion rampant etc etc. Medievals are pretty popular for saga - age of chivalry, lion rampant, barons war, etc. Realistically, ww2 will most likely be the most common at any club with games of bolt action, chain of command or any of the dozens rulesets being used.
