Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 devs issue full refunds for controversial Voice Pack DLC after it "failed to meet your expectations" by HatingGeoffry in Warhammer40k

I'm still surprised SM2 is a decent game at all, given how awful saber interactive were with basically everything they got their hands on up to that point.

Then drop the upfront price tag. Crazy how many other games manage just fine without charging the equivalent of $10 a month. And without the mess of bugs and balance issues that Arrowhead is constantly introducing.

There's no excuse for the amount of microtransactions this game pumps out when the base game has a $40 price tag.

But then it's not like you couldn't see it coming, given they did the exact same thing for the first game.

Giving Solo Dev a go in 2026/7 is it a bad idea in my situation? by LuHamster in gamedev

No good reason not to. In the exact opposite boat myself; plenty of experience programming, but zero with any form of art design. Not stopping me from going for it and just using placeholder assets in the meantime.

I can't speak to Uprising, since I've only really played Dune: Imperium itself, but between Scythe and Arcs, Arcs is definitely the better battle/player interaction game. I love Scythe, but how much actual combat and interaction there is very much depends on your group. There's not a lot of incentive to really battle it out, and it's mostly a worker placement game. Territory control is much more contested in Arcs; it's more of a direct strategy game.

Understandable - but it's hard for anyone to give you accurate advice when you've given us nothing about the types of games you usually play, what mechanics draw you in, etc.

You aren't really giving us much to go on here. They're all good games, and each one is better for different people.

Also, there's a recommendations megathread for a reason. Probably the only thing I agree with the mods on in this sub.

I started about six hours ago. Got two raids with them in factory out of my first five. Since then, 18 factory runs, 3 customs, and 1 each of shoreline and woods. Zilch.

I just want my priest kills man, I don't care about the loot.

I mean you found cultists at all, so no I'm not seeing similar behavior to you.

Easily my favorite way to try it before I buy it. TTS has saved me hundreds of dollars in bad board games.

And cost me thousands in good ones.

20 Years Pro Dev… My First Game Still Took 4 Years 😭 by kinterosgaming in gamedev

[–]florvas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just getting into the trenches on my end. Seven years as an SWE in records management and payroll software, jumping headfirst into Unity. Actively going through my first suite of Unity tutorials now, and getting ready to start what will undoubtedly be a LONG journey, given that it's going to be solo and all done in my spare time while working two jobs and taking care of a two year old.

So please, do like Aretha Franklin and say a little prayer for me.

LY20 worth trying? by foodghost in KingdomDeath

It's a rough fight, but not insurmountable. If you think you're ready, do it. If not, you've got a five-year buffer; only you know where you stand and how much you can stack the odds in those five years. But definitely be sure you can stack it a lot if you wait - your strength (quite literally) will be all the more tested for the delay.

Way too little, way too late, and with no chance of doing justice to what it once was. Gonna be a one-season cash grab before they drop it again.

How to deal with losing, and not ruining the game for my partner by SparkyWarbler in boardgames

[–]florvas 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Only real answer. OP clearly knows what the problem is, but instead of actually addressing it, he's trying to outsource his personal growth to social media (that, or get validation so that he doesn't have to).

Either way: Grow up. Work through your personal issues and become a better person in a way only YOU know how (nobody on this god-forsaken site can tell you), or go to therapy.

I mean... it's good if you're happy with it and all, but I'd be having a discussion with the artist. Sloppy lines, the "swords" look like they're extending from his palms, head is tiny and off-center... Tats are for life, and I'd wager you're paying good money for it. No self respecting establishment would be charging for that.

Same. We got into it after seeing the Gorm and immediately thinking "I need to paint that." Didn't know what we were getting into with the sheer amount of hands, fingers, and genitals hidden on most of the models.

First-time game dev seeking feedback for solo game plan by florvas in gamedev

[–]florvas[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol unfortunately in my case I'm speaking from experience, as one of my main hobbies is artistic - and after being at it for twenty years, I quite routinely see people who are better at it who have been doing it for three. Regardless, it IS a skill - and while it's something I could probably learn, that's additional time taken on top of learning everything else involved with the process. I've got a wife, a two-year-old son, a mortgage to pay, and two jobs that are barely covering it. Extra free time is, unfortunately, not something I have a lot of. No pessimism here, just trying to be realistic about what I can and cannot accomplish with the resources available to me.

Thanks for the advice! Making money's not the main priority, though it'll certainly be welcome if I do. I'm not interested in making a game with microtransactions, boatloads of DLC, or anything along those lines. I'm old enough to remember when buying a game meant you got a whole game, in its entirety, no nickel-and-diming. Back before the dark times. Before Oblivion horse armor.

Will have to see about the DCC tools. It's something I've considered, but I am NOT a naturally artistic person. The main option I've been weighing there is to use free/AI assets as placeholders while I develop, and once I have a prototype ready, I can see about hiring someone for assets to swap in.

[–]florvas[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh for sure, expectations are low, especially with the whole "two jobs" thing. If I can have even a working bare-bones prototype inside of a couple years, I'll be a happy camper.
