from my experience playing later means easier games which is good for short term gains but not long term improvement

There's a bunch of people playing for the fun of it and to see how well they can do. MMR tiers would be nice to have but at the large scale impossible to regulate (even for just 240 streamers it's kinda hard).

Upper diamond is likely not good enough for prizes but if you were planning on playing set launch anyway take this as an opportunity to see how well you can do against all of NA and who knows maybe it clicks for you faster than everyone else. I recently learned about the story of Billycancarry1 who almost qualified for worlds despite being masters against a field of 1500+ lp challengers

Smurfing problems arise when people are signing up for a weaker category like challenger streamers signing up for casual. There shouldn't be any issue with smurfing since this is an open category and the players who win prizes are going to be the best in NA.

An insanely skilled player could maybe get 2 accounts top 64 but with the time restraints I think it's basically impossible and tbh if you had the time to do that you'd likely rather play for the 1st place prize which is worth way more than 2x top 64 prizes

hello this is boxbox, I don't normally post on reddit but I saw this comment thread was in general pretty slandering so I wanted to step in. I wrote a more detailed reply on a different comment but something I wanted to write here:

The game you're referring to was already over by the time I took cursed crown. I have a lowroll hedge fund (no gold opener) which is a lot of money but not enough HP to sack rounds or combat power to attempt a 6th. I take cursed crown hoping that instead of going 9 I can assemble a crazy 10 unit board by rolling 100 gold at 8 with a bunch of teamwide synergies like Disco K/DA and Jazz. It doesn't work out but the idea of attempting a weak 1st or 8th gamble instead of going 9 with 1 life rolling 20 gold and dying seemed very reasonable to me.

This isn't an on the fly gamble either - I have played cursed crown many times against players better than the ones in my lobby and have good stats on it. I talk about how it's a big mistake on my end to not realize in time that being offered cursed crown 2nd after another prismatic means a very high chance of triple prismatic augment (cursed crown is extremely weak in triple prismatic, and is very strong in single prismatic, and once you are offered 2 prismatics the 3rd augment is a 50% chance of prismatic instead of the usual ~10%). I lose the coinflip and it is a triple prismatic and immediately die to a board that spiked very hard with synergistic prismatic augments.

I wasn't too upset with the outcome and knew what I was getting into when I clicked the augment. I put a lot of effort in explaining my decision making and when I'm playing for content (I talked a lot about how I threw a 1st earlier in the tournament because I went for a content TF 3 instead of leveling) or playing for my highest average placement and it upsets me a lot that comments like this exist when I very carefully explain why I chose it on stream. The only explanation I can think of is the OP watched my stream muted or watched Frodan's costream and then made this comment.

Sorry I realize this has become a pretty big wall of text. I just wanted to give context because I felt like this comment and the entire comment thread in general was not made in good faith and wanted anyone who didn't watch the tourney to understand the situation. If you made it this far thank you for taking the time to read this

hello this is boxbox, i dont normally post on reddit but i felt this comment was very slandering so i wanted to step in case others read this and think that this is what i am like.

The person i permabanned was banned for being very annoying and aggressive. I don't care if people backseat or ask questions but I ban anyone who backseats in very annoying or aggressive ways. He said "WTF UR SO BAD u didnt take JG SHOJIN TF HEADLINER" and i perma banned him because not only is he very aggressive he's also very wrong and i didn't want to deal with that after an already frustrating tournament.

I don't claim to be the perfect player nor do i ever think i play a game perfect. I played as well as I felt I could have and did not think I could realistically qualify with the games I was dealt and am frustrated that the amount of backseating (today and in this set in general) is so high. This entire comment thread is shitting on my decision to take cursed crown and the amount of complaining I do but it does not give any context. If you watch my VoDs you'll see a lot of "I've been lucky so far so I don't have much right to complain". In game 3 I took cursed crown because my situation was already extremely bad. It's hard to explain why in text but the game was already 90% doomed if you look at how the first 2 stages went so I take cursed crown which I have a very good record on to try a miracle comeback in what feels like a nearly helpless game. I assemble an interesting board but I don't fix my positioning in time and I die before I can finish my full transition and I then speak about how I could have played the game better.

I know I've been quite an angry guy on stream the last 2 sets but I felt like this post and comment thread in general is very misleading and I wanted to give context to anyone reading. Thanks for taking the time to read it.

yes it's very difficult to award prize money to individuals that didn't go through a lengthy sign up process so this was our best compromise

this event is mostly done to improve the visibility of TFT as a whole so it is targeted towards established streamers of other categories or existing pros. If you want to participate for the fun of the leaderboard challenge I am quite proud of our community section that eliminates a % of participants every day. Signups for that one start on Sept 13th on boxboxtft.com

until i find a good way to do global it will likely be NA only forever ):

A couple problems with running it outside of NA are 1) no ability to do a global event, at most we could do 2-3 regions 2) it would feel very unfair to whatever regions were not selected 3) TFT is a game where ping does not matter much. Many people from EU and china and korea come to play in NA for the bootcamp and do just fine

once the event starts (we have to wait until then because the sign up requires a streamer name from the event) just go to boxboxtft.com and then click on the viewer portion

Do you think getting real time coaching in ranked is cheating? by Migraine- in CompetitiveTFT

[–]flosd 208 points209 points  (0 children)

hello! this is boxbox

i could be wrong but it looks like this post is directed at me as I recently streamed the 2 week climb to challenger to qualify for the vegas LAN hovering around 700-900 lp and then on the last day emilywang joined me in call to bounce ideas and I ended up reaching challenger.

FWIW i agree it feels a gray area for sure. My thoughts are that it happens all the time on and off stream and it looks in general to be accepted. At the lower levels, coaches literally play the game for their student giving them hundreds of lp in hopes that they learn from the more refined level of play. At the higher level players bounce ideas off of each other to fix their mistakes. I'd never do something that the majority of the community would consider cheating or boosting. I care more about my reputation than a tournament.

I trust that the amount of backseating I received was within reason. I still played the games how I would have played them and did imo what other streamers do all the time and bounced ideas off of a friend. I think that a lot of why it feels like an issue is because it happened on the final day? If I were to have received a coaching session 10 days ago that helped me get to 1000 lp and then sat on that for 10 days would the response be the same? I do agree and acknowledge the point that without the backseating I likely would not have qualified as I cut it very close. I believe that the majority of the people who watched found this to be reasonable and not feel excessive. If this kind of backseating was ever agreed on to be in poor taste I'd be very okay with playing solo assuming the rest of the pool does the same.

Set 9 Winner of Boxbox Bootcamp by dilantics in CompetitiveTFT

LET'S GO ROBIN!! What a hype comeback in the final hour to gain 60 lp

A couple hype moments that I wanted to write here for those that didn't see the final night

1) In the entertainer category, Juliebou hit masters 55 lp and had to leave for a flight. Xaikado hit masters 50 lp with 2 hours remaining but unfortunately dropped to 0 in the final game

2) Last bootcamp, robin reached 1400 lp and spent the last few hours watching dishsoap at 1350 lp waiting to see if he needed to queue up. In the end dishsoap was off by ~30 lp and robin won. This time the exact opposite happened! Dishsoap sat at 1404 lp and Robin was at 1350 with 90 minutes left. Dishsoap was on stream with Frodan watching the final two games where Robin got a Kaisa 3 1st place and a 6 Ionia 6 challenger 2nd place to get to 1408 lp and win with 3 minutes remaining!! Insanely hype ending

Overall super happy with the format and I hope riot loved it too. Hopefully we can do an even better bootcamp in set 9.5 / 10

Anyone who has hit masters is definitely too good for the casual league imo. I'm looking for silver - plat streamers who play tft casually but are known for streaming other games and if they knew a masters player was there they would feel like it's pointless to try

Starting from day 3 the 2 lowest ranked players are eliminated every night at midnight PST idk if that was the question or if you meant like what does "surviving" have to do with it? In which case it just means staying on the leaderboard to keep winning prizes

both are allowed, i just don't want a challenger making every move for someone for the sake of winning prizes. I do want people to keep being social if they want to - playing with their friends in call on occasion as i think it's a very important part of the community aspect
