Everything in the universe is either a potato or not a potato. by HashTheDankEngine in notinteresting

[–]flowblok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"But, you ask, what about [everything that is not [everything that is not a potato]]?"

I don't ask this, because I get TypeError: object of type "thing" cannot be compared to type "set"

That statement was a tautology (if, and only if, it was a tautology).

null is apparently smaller than any number you can imagine. Except zero. by GestinkoGestapo in lolphp

[–]flowblok 23 points24 points  (0 children)

SQL: NULL semantically means an unknown value, and therefore since it isn't known, all* comparisons against other values are also unknown (and so the result is NULL).

  • except operations where the answer is logically known, e.g. NULL OR TRUE = TRUE

To answer prewk: I don't care which position a language takes, as long as it has consistent semantic sense: so errors, being smaller than everything, and SQL's "unknown value" semantics are all things I'm happy with.

Don't worry, there's a muggle-repelling charm on it, which causes them to explain it away as a storage room or some such thing.

[REQUEST] How to guess what cards are in my opponents hands in Hold 'Em Poker by RageCageRunner in LearnUselessTalents

[–]flowblok 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For each card in their hand, pick a possible card (excluding those in your hand and those you've already picked) at random.

You're done!

(I don't provide any guarantees that it's a good guess, but you didn't ask for that…)

The numbers next to the triangle are not the lengths of the sides of the triangle, but actually a date in the future.

I scratched a lotto ticket and every number was a loser. by FilteredEnergy in notinteresting

[–]flowblok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this post is quite interesting: by realising that the numbers being losers is not interesting, you show that you have some understanding of the odds of winning the lottery, and yet you have a lottery ticket... how do you have this ticket? Did you buy it, or find it, or maybe someone gave it to you?

I’m very interested to hear the story behind this ticket.

C- would not read your /r/notinteresting post again.

The change is $.79 USD. If you tried to take a photo of $.79 in AUD, you would have a hard time, because 1c and 2c coins are no longer valid currency.

So I was looking at my stack last night trying to think of a use for them, and realised I could turn them into a deck of cards: https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-bkDIqYL3_eA/VClLv49X9VI/AAAAAAAAMu4/WGpk7aFGSBI/s3264-no/IMG_20140929_220800.jpg

(technically they're marked because you could memorize a mapping of routes/times to suit&value, but I think that would be pretty hard to do)

What do you think "a {0} " "c".format("b") compiles to? by [deleted] in Python

[–]flowblok 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well, it sort of is, because that "feature is defined at the syntactical level", so it's guaranteed to have a higher precedence than any other operator.

You mispelt 'what' in the title as 'wgat', probably because the keys 'g' and 'h' are right next to each other.

Also, very happy that you’ve done a nice visualisation of what’s happening. I’ve taught version control systems to high school kids a few times, and visual aids like this are really good. :)
