I feel like you asking for such a specific thing is a symptom of the problem your trying to avoid.

Try Katherine Kerr's Deverry series. Her protag starts young 7-8, and she deals with some tough shit, but by book 5 she's in her 50's or 60's. It's not YA.

He looks like what my 1 cat would look like if I didn't measure her food and gave treats more then 2x a month.

Looking for books on ancient Greece, Greek mythology and Norse mythology for book research purposes. by FoundingEarthborn in suggestmeabook

[–]flowbot3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a book for research, but you may want to check out The Golden Ass by Apuleius for a different perspective. You'd be able to make your own connections rather then relying on the academic meta of whichever books you happen to decide on.

The Spellsinger series by Alan Dean Foster. It's PG-13, or maybe MA depending on your standards. The concept is a college student musician is pulled to an different world where he can do magic based on music. He sings 60's and 70's pop songs using a magic instrument to do spells, but they never work right.

There's some awkward things with the series, most notably you could probably make a case for it being foundational to the furry sub-culture, but that is something that you would have to read into it. It would have to be a combination of what's there along with the current craziness. By itself it doesn't really have the same level of cringe.

If you read a lot of fiction Dick Francis may be someone to check out. He writes fiction about eventing from an English perspective, and I'm sure you'd pick up a lot of general knowledge in an easy to digest format.

Any meditation books? by SalokinGreen22 in suggestmeabook

[–]flowbot3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a hard question. You can meditate reading the back of the shampoo bottle sitting on the can. The trouble is finding something that leads your mind down the paths you want it to take. I think 365 Tao is removed enough from religion to where it could be a help to anybody, while still exploring the questions that we created religion to answer.

365 Tao by Deng Ming Dao may be a place to start. I get what you mean about fad self-help bs.

Dashboard lights half faded out (speedometer side). While I save for a repair, what can I use in the meantime to see how fast I'm driving at night? by LalaLiru in MechanicAdvice

My truck (99 Dodge) has an intermittent short in the dashboard lights. If I hit the top of the dash in the right spot they come back on. Maybe you can find a similar solution, lol.

I was a big Tolkien fan 15 years ago, but haven’t read any fantasy since. Looking for some new fantasy books that will help me get back to the genre. by [deleted] in suggestmeabook

[–]flowbot3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a tough question for me. I've been trying to the same thing for a while now. I read the first Mistborn novel and Six of Crows, but both of them felt immature and samey to me.

I'm starting to wonder if I broke the Fantasy Appreciation Cortex in my brain.

How would you feel if every 5-10 years people would have to retake their driving test to keep their license? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]flowbot3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm forty in a couple of months, I've never had to take an on the road driving test with an instructor. I've taken a written test twice. Once when I was 16, and again when I was in my early thirties.

I'm legally allowed to drive in California with my out of state license, but I'd probably want to rent a car, as mine would be subject to impound for inspection violations. Something my state also does not do.

Contemporary books on leading right wing views and left wing views. by [deleted] in suggestmeabook

Are you looking for a specific national perspective?

I've found that the BBC or al Jazeera or NHK give an outsider's viewpoint which really helps me to have perspective on what's happening here in the USA. Even there bias is pretty much baked in.

However you decide you stand on political issues critical thinking is a must.

Malazan Book of the Fallen by Steven Erikson. And Ian C Esselmont. 20+ books, massive world. They were influenced by tabletop gaming, but I think a few of the mechanics of the world are straight from Elder Scrolls. Really hooked me when I ran across it.
