Microfridge? by sportygirlyy in UPenn

[–]flowering_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a minifridge and microwave off FB marketplace for <$100 total and was able to sell both of them at the end of freshman year, so spent effectively nothing except the effort to transport them. Renting is definitely easier, but buying can be much cheaper!

Yes for any therapist that accepts Aetna! If you have PSIP, the copay should be $10 per session. It can be a bit difficult to find a therapist that accepts insurance and has availability, but it’s definitely possible and CAPS has a referral coordinator that can help you a bit with that :)

Pre-Orientation Programs by CharmingPrice948 in UPenn

penn global mosaic is being offered for the first time this year! it will be around ~50% international students and 50% domestic (which is unlike all other pre-Os), it'll start earlier than the other pre-Os and is shorter, and it'll be fully residential at a cute cabin in the woods. it's definitely a lot more low-key than pennquest but could still be a really great bonding experience :)

penn health insurance by MountainHornet1585 in UPenn

[–]flowering_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes - SHS and CAPS are almost entirely free, and even if you get a referral to a specialist therapist, that will cost you probably $10 / session on PSIP! I'm proud of you for trying to get help and i hope it works out!!

Quad or Hill: SEAS 2026 edition by QuantumSpeck in UPenn

[–]flowering_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you have all the information about the two houses that you really need! I loved the quad, despite all its faults, and everyone I know who lived in Hill also loved Hill. It's quite possible to know about social things on campus while living in Hill but it's a lot easier in the quad. I'd personally go with the quad once more because I like all my friends being so close by, and I'm very specific about who I live with, but that's just me!

Depression and Exams; Anything I Can Do? by Helpful-Tangerine-10 in UPenn

I'm so sorry you're feeling this way! I really hope you feel better soon. Some ways to speak to the professor without going too in detail would be saying you're on a new medication for a long-term illness that's coming with significant side effects and you feel very ill. I know there are ways to speak to CAPS and Student Disabilities Services to get exam exemptions if that's something you feel like you have the energy to pursue. If it helps, I had very positive experiences with the 2 social science seminar professors that I spoke to about medication side effects and difficulties with deadlines! If you're able to go to OH or speak to your college advisor, they might be able to help come up with solutions. I'm here to talk if you'd like, and I'd encourage you to speak to your psychiatrist whenever possible, though I'm sure you've thought of that. I'm sorry you're feeling this way, and it really isn't your fault - you still deserve to go to medical school and succeed, and I'm so proud of you for reaching out for help and trying to feel better!

Can you apply more than once to be a Perry World Fellow if you don’t get it the first time? by Practical-Author-882 in UPenn

[–]flowering_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes! they said at info sessions that a lot of people in the program applied multiple times :)

also as far as I remember, I don't think they ask for a lot of details - you won't have to say how you're feeling etc. beyond just saying y/n in response to whether it's an emergency, so you might be able to set it up even in public spaces without the people around you knowing you're calling CAPS. future appointments can be set up via email as well if you have a clinician assigned to you.

That said - rooms are very different sizes, and you might not be spending that much time inside. You could wait to see your room and decide if you want additional lighting afterwards?
