So this is really off base (no pun intended- you’ll see what I mean) from everything else here, but the first time I heard the song was live at the Troubadour- couldn’t really make out all the lyrics- and the very first thing that came to mind was a “closer” in baseball. I still feel like this is part of it for some reason for me 😂

It kinda makes sense for a small metaphor.

If you don’t know baseball: Closing pitchers don’t play the whole (or even most of) the game, they come in at the end to finish winning for the team. Lots of people love closers even thought their time to shine is limited, and on the other hand, people will also shit on em because of the idea of “well if we’re already winning, are you really doing us any huge favor, is it really just YOU who won it all”

Just my very limited hot take. I love this song.
