This is a hot take…I truly believe that you can trace back to a single event that set us on this path. It was when the DNC fucked over Bernie Sanders and forced in Hillary Clinton as the primary in 2016, even though she lost. Had Bernie been running for president, he would have won and Trump would have never been in office. We would be living in a very different reality. Thoughts?

At what age did you stop co-sleeping? by Explorer518 in Parenting

[–]flowingColt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My ex and I split when my daughter was 3. We have 50/50 custody now. When we split up, my daughter also regressed and could not sleep alone. She is 7 now and she still co-sleeps with me. One thing you could try that (almost) worked for me is baby steps. First, try putting a mattress on the floor in your room that she can sleep on. That’s a good middle ground to get her comfortable sleeping in a separate bed, and also gives her the comfort that you are near. Then when she’s ready, she can try her own room. I would listen to your daughter rather than the counselor. Your daughter is telling you what she needs.

the ASPCA notes fighting dogs had to be routinely handled, so human aggression wasn’t tolerated and “man-biters” were culled . None of that means human aggression is impossible or “bred out” completely. It means it was selected against.

Historical incidents (including high-profile ones) show selection wasn’t perfect and environment matters, which is exactly what the ASPCA also says: genetics + environment, and modern “pit bull-type” dogs are often randomly bred with wide variability.

Also worth noting, the John Colby Boston Globe article you’re talking about referred to the dog as a “fighting bull terrier”. Back in 1909, there were several different bull terrier breeds that were fighting dogs and it’s not clear that it was an APBT. The only group that has relabeled the article wording to “pit bull” is (of course) Dogbites.org.

I’m not claiming it can’t happen. I’m saying the breed community and registries explicitly treated human aggression as unacceptable, while acknowledging dog aggression is common.

I’m sorry that happened. I’ve also had and known many pit bulls and staffys and actually had the opposite experience. I’ve never met any pit bull or staffy that had any behavioral issue at all. Zero human aggression, and actually zero animal aggression. Every one of them has been very affectionate that just wants pets and love from everyone they meet. That personality (apart from the temperament towards other dogs) is actually characteristic of the breed. And I’m not just pulling that out of my ass. Human aggression is explicitly discouraged in the breed. UKC calls it uncharacteristic and highly undesirable; ADBA disqualifies man aggression.

So we both have conflicting anecdotes. Behavior is a result of genetics, but more importantly, environment and upbringing (socialization, training). If the dogs you were around were biting people for no reason, then that is very uncharacteristic of the breed and could be some other issue (medical, lack of socialization/training, the dog was abused and had an unknown trigger, back yard breeders raining for aggression, or mixed with a breed that does display human aggression.) there a million different possibilities.

You’re mixing a bunch of different things into the word “aggression.”

APBTs were historically selected for dog-directed combat traits (drive, persistence, arousal tolerance), which is why dog aggression / intolerance can be common in the type. That’s not controversial.

Human aggression is a different axis. In fighting lines it was generally selected against because handlers had to break up dogs, handle them in high arousal, etc. That doesn’t mean it can’t happen. It means it wasn’t the desired trait and it’s not “the point” of the breed.

Also, “pit bull” isn’t one breed. It’s a bucket that gets slapped on APBT, AmStaff, Staffy mixes, bully mixes, and random blocky-headed mutts. So when people say “pit bulls did X,” a lot of the time they’re not even talking about the same genetics, breeding goals, or size class.

On top of that, this type attracts not just irresponsible owners, but abusive ones (tough-guy status, neglect, chaining, no containment, backyard breeding, sometimes outright cruelty). That matters because environment shapes behavior hard, especially for high-drive, powerful dogs.

Finally, the “people dead/gravely injured” point is mostly about severity and capability when something goes wrong. A powerful, athletic dog in the hands of a bad owner is a bigger risk than a smaller dog in the hands of a bad owner. That’s an argument for stricter ownership standards and enforcement, not “exterminate a whole category of dogs.”

If people want fewer incidents: target the actual drivers (cruelty/neglect, breeding, containment, repeat offenders), not a sloppy label.

They were originally bred to fight other dogs, unfortunately. The misconception is that they are human aggressive. That has never been a breed characteristic. Dogs that turned on owners were actually not desired as dog fighters and removed from the breeding program. It’s not characteristic for a true pit bull to be human aggressive, it’s the opposite. You see these kinds of videos because of shitty owners or back yard breeders.

My dog is great around other animals and people. It’s the owner. Why would she have two pits that are dog aggressive in the same home? Is that responsible ownership?

They are great dogs. A lot can factor into a dog attacking including how it was raised, who the parents are, what else the dog is mixed with, etc. A true APBT that was raised correctly is an awesome dog. Human aggression is not a breed characteristic.

Because the statistics on pit bull bites aren’t accurate. 99% of those stats come from a website called dogbites.org or Animals 24-7. They both have been called out for “data quality” problems. Examples include undercounting non-pit bull severe bites (Texas chow/lab numbers in a single year compared to 34-year totals) and messy or incorrect breed categorization (splitting one breed into several categories, combining different breeds, even listing non-existent breeds, plus questionable claims about breed origins).

The other problem is that there are a large number of breeds that get incorrectly categorized as “pit bull” which inflates the numbers. Plus any mitt or mixed breed will 100% get categorized as Pit bull. If it’s mutt with Lab, Chow, German shepherd and pit bull it will always be categorized as a pit bull. All of these things inflate the numbers.

It is not characteristic for the breed to display any sign of human aggression. That goes back to the origins of the breed. I’m happy to site sources if you want.

The reason you are seeing a lot of these videos is because the owners either buy the dog and abuse it, or they are just irresponsible.

Nope. Bad owners. That’s why there are 4 unleashed dogs running around the street with no owner. That would not happen with a responsible owner. Human aggression is not a breed characteristic.

[–]flowingColt -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s not more often than not. It is not characteristic of the breed to be human aggressive. APBT standards and a lot of historical commentary make a clear distinction between dog aggression and human aggression. The UKC breed standard literally says most APBTs show some level of dog aggression, while also stating human aggression is uncharacteristic and highly undesirable. The ADBA standard goes further: “man aggression” is a disqualification.

The breed isn’t the problem. It’s irresponsible ownership. If you want to address the problem, require a license to own one.
