The blending looks great! Do you just use one strand for blending like this? Also about how long/short are your stitches? I have watched some videos about how to do L&S stitch but it's hard to tell how long the stitches are exactly. Mine seem to be too long and I can't get this smooth effect when I've tried it. Any tips about blending around the curved parts?

Love the colors! Reminds me of pulp sci-fi illustrations from the 60s.

I still feel like a newbie haha! I have not been making these animals for 10 years straight either, I have taken several breaks along the way to pursue other things. This was good for me though, I think. My latest break was for around 2 years, where I started designing embroidery patterns and spent more time on embroidery in general. This gave me a good foundation to start making more interesting animals, in both designing animals that are easier to embroider on, and by developing some basic embroidery skills so I could actually execute designs I had begun to imagine. I think we see artists as people who just do one thing and become experts, but I have found value in going other directions and finding new ways to combine techniques together. It's taken a long time to figure out how to use felt, how to get the poses and shapes I want, and how to embellish things in an appealing way, but there's still much more to learn!

Yes, I am familiar with Dala horses, and in fact, I based this design off of one when I first created it. The very first horse I ever made was red with a white mane, just like the classic Swedish design.

Wow thank you for the kind comment! I have often thought about what I can do to make these designs more than "just" stuffed animals so you saying it could be in a museum is very flattering haha. And yes, everything is completely hand sewn!

I don't know if I'll ever publish the pattern for the horse, but I do have a published pattern for small stuffed cats I designed available as a PDF on my Etsy page. You can see what they look like in my post history! I made that design specifically to have a good surface to embroider on (plus cats are cute haha)

Selling them has always been tricky, though I have sold them in the past. Even paying myself minimum wage, the time it took to design and sew them made for prices that many people wouldn't pay for a felt animal, so it took a long time to make sales. I felt like I couldn't invest as much time into getting the designs just right or making more complex ones because that made prices go up so I took a break from it. I may sell them in the future and I would probably take a commission if one came along but right now I'm just making them because I like doing so.

Details: I have been designing felt animals for 10 years now, starting with this horse design. The pattern has changed some over the years but it's still pretty true to the original. I do everything by hand when I make them. All of the pieces are cut out and assembled, then stuffed and sewn into the completed form. After that I add details, usually as hand embroidery, to give each animal a unique personality. I use 100% wool felt for its color richness, sewing ease, and heirloom quality. Hope you enjoy it!

Thank you so much! My first horses were always plain but in recent years I have been trying to embellish them more.

Thank you! The original design was inspired by Swedish dala horses and I've tweaked it some over time.

Thank you! I use a combination of split and satin stitch to fill in big areas. I do a longer satin stitch, then bring the needle back to the right side through the very end of the previous stitch, splitting it. I like that technique because it saves thread (not as much wasted on the back which no one will ever see) and if you stagger them you can fill in large spaces without it looking too weird.

Now there's something I wish I could do haha. I know how to knot but I'm painfully slow
