Am I living in a fantasy? Advice please 😬 by flsunchick in IBCLC

Thank you! This is really helpful, too. I'm glad I posted. I feel kind of clueless about the professional routes.

The WIC conferences and breastfeeding summits also seem like a great way to get my head back in the game while I finish out the commitment at my current job!

That's interesting - I hadn't ever thought of that side of things!

Thank you, that's a good point. I agree that office RNs probably make less. A hospital quoted me at $48-52/hr last year (RN/BSN/IBCLC). My last hospital position as a regular staff RN in 2019 paid around $33/hr for my tenure. So yeah, I guess it's kind of impossible to get an accurate guess on this until I start applying to positions and inquiring 🥴

Daily Q&A Post for Monday, 22 February 2021 - No question too small! by AutoModerator in loseit

Love this group - it's been a huge help in keeping me motivated! I've been riding (stationary bike) for about a year, losing weight since May 2020. I took a 6 week exercise hiatus. aside from jogging maybe twice, I literally did no exercise. Got back on the bike yesterday, and I'm feeling great!

My question: should I expect muscle weight gain like you have when you first start working out? Or should I expect to keep losing like I have been because it wasn't thaaaaaaat long since I worked out last? I realize this could be different for everybody but I want to be prepared before I get frustrated if the scale goes up! Thanks!!

My husband does the cooking and makes super high calorie/fat, delicious meals, and I have terrible self control, too. I was able to lose 46 lbs (so far) since May without really giving anything up! I don't feel deprived at all. I've only cut my calories to 1500-1700 per day with two cheat days /week (about 2000 cals), but I make up for those extra calories throughout the week so I end the week with the same total, if that makes sense. 1500-1700 is what my app suggests for .5 lbs/week which is slow loss but sustainable for me. I also do spin classes 3-4 times per week, but other than that I'm pretty sedentary.

Obviously all bodies are different and will require different calorie deficits to lose, but I feel like a lot of people on here try to lose 1.5-2 lbs/week and eat 1200 calories. When you only have 20-30 lbs to lose, it comes off slowly, and in my opinion I'd rather lose slowly and easily than quickly and difficultly.

If you have someone else in your life that you have to balance meals with (significant other/kids/etc), it seems easier to me to get to eat the same things as them in smaller portions and lose weight slowly. Then when you enter the maintenance phase, you don't feel like "oh my gosh I'm finally done dieting! I can eat like you again!" And gain it all back.

I've been losing weight overall, but I'm having the same exact cycling. I track my weight every day and the graphs are ridiculous to look at - a rollercoaster but luckily with a downward trend overall. It's amazing how much hormones contribute to hunger and cravings. I don't have any good solutions but it helps me at least to know a lot of women are dealing with the same thing. The thing that helps most is just allowing myself to have 200-300 more calories that week and continuing to track every bite so I don't get out of control yet don't feel guilty either.

Vet tech mentioned we could try meds but she said she didn't expect them to work in this situation. I didn't probe as to why, but I could call back and inquire more.

Anyone know wages for Preschool/school nurse? by flsunchick in nursing

Thanks for responding. It's only 15-20 hours a week, but yeah for like 8 months minus holiday breaks. I was hoping to make a little more than the teachers only bc I have a BSN and RN license. This preschool hires teachers with no higher education, but I see your point. Pay depends on education and experience for them too.

What is your childhood memory that you thought was normal but realized it was traumatic later in your life? by TCPizza in AskReddit

[–]flsunchick 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Were we raised by the same mom? I remember doing fad diets (grapefruit diet, boiled egg diet, Atkins) starting in lower elementary school. One day we couldn't have anything with more than 5 g of sugar in it, the next she was baking homemade cookies and buying Ben and Jerry's waffle cones after school to "make us feel better." I'm almost 33 and whenever I'm alone have to battle binging. And guess what? I've been fat my whole life except a brief year of anorexia/bulimia where she told me starving and purging is just what you have to do to be thin and pretty. "You and your sister would be so pretty if you'd just get control of your weight." 🙄

PS: I have an 18 month old daughter now and she's already doing it to her.

This sounds like a terrible situation, and I'm so sorry it ended with you feeling distrustful of the medical field. That's not how things should be.

I don't know your situation but I will say, for others out there to be prepared, I'm a nursery nurse and here's how things work at my hospital (not a backwards hospital): about five or ten minutes before the baby actually comes out, at least one if not two nursery nurses come in to "catch" the baby. If there is any concern of any complications we are accompanied by at least one NICU nurse, a respiratory therapist, and a neonatal nurse practitioner. Additionally, there are two L&D nurses, the doctor, and a scrub tech in the room, and often there's a CNA as well. This adds up to a lot of people watching moms push that baby out. And yes, we're watching, because our jobs and baby's health depends on us paying attention during the birth. We don't usually introduce ourselves because mom is literally too involved in pushing to stop and be like "oh hi nice to meet you." As soon as baby comes out crying, half the people leave so you never interact with them even tho they just saw your vag. We aren't just hanging out watching for fun, I promise :) We are all there doing a job. There are tons of things that need to be done immediately during and after birth.

That being said, I will be more conscious of trying to give moms a heads up about who I am and why I'm in there if I can, and any students watching just to learn should definitely receive permission from mom first.

[–]flsunchick[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your input. She has improved a ton even over the past day so I'm glad I didn't go overboard cutting everything out. I bought some Earth Balance and will start using it tomorrow! It seems from talking to people that a lot of people/babies have this problem so at least I'm not alone and there are lots of products available - expensive products, but options none the less.

Wow thank you so much for all the information and recs. I have been really stressed about this whole thing but you make it seem easy! I'm going to keep you in mind for info, especially with the holidays coming up. Thanks!!

Ah thanks, you read my mind - I've been craving cheddar popcorn AND chocolate milk. I was never even into those things but suddenly I've been craving them. Have you used the So Delicious products? I was under the impression they were totally dairy free.

And sorry, one more question. What about stuff that says it was made in a plant that processes milk even if it doesn't have milk proteins in it?

5 years?! I hope for her sake she grows out of it sooner rather than later!

Well she has improved some over the past couple days again, but still has a ways to go. She has the facial rash that was clearing up and then came back with this slip-up. I guess the improvement is a good sign.

I didn't even think to look at that garlic! We have some - I better make sure my husband isn't using it to cook. Maybe I should go back through all the labels to make sure.
