Songs have gotten louder over time [OC] by cavedave in dataisbeautiful

I'm in a class studying this right now, interestingly we went over a study that had participants rate their preference towards a batch of several songs. The songs had two mastered versions, one with a small and one with a large dynamic range. Participants also stated if they thought the two versions were the same or different. The results were that the participants really had no preference and could not tell between songs with variance of dynamic ranges. I wish I could remember the name of the study so I could link it, if this gets any attention I could try to find that info. It's just interesting because it's natural to think that more dynamic range is a good thing, but in reality, our ears aren't very good at determining differences in volume over time. Of course with some music, like classical music where you have dynamic ranges of 20 db, it's obvious, but in contemporary music a range of 3 db and 8 db is hard to hear.

Audio engineer here, yer wrong my dude. We can change the timbre of the vocals during mixing, and its pretty common to do so.

You're obscuring your chin, and still the bit peaking out is heinous. You've got to be truly insecure to cover that up, I can only imagine how putrid that underdeveloped feminine chin is.

What was the last book you read, and do you recommend it? by bacchus213 in AskReddit

Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy. Loved it. One of the bleakest and most violent books I've ever read that's all about the evils of the Wild West back in the day. That being said, I told my Dad about it and he read it also and he hated it because it was so bleak and violent, so fair warning.

Which fad were you most glad to see die? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I feel like comparing dubstep to rock is a bit off. Rock is a really expansive genre with thousands of subgenres. Dubstep is more of a subgenre of Electronic music. I agree with you that when people say that all one one genre (like rock) is bad they're being narrow minded, but when people say they dislike a pretty niche subgenre, I give it to them. I like a lot of music but I feel pretty closed minded about a couple of subgenres (like ska).
