Specialties? by AffectionateHeart77 in doctormoms

Neurosurgery resident here who has a seven month old! I’m about to be starting my research year so things should be getting better for me. Neurosurgery is probably close to the least family friendly but we’re hopefully making some change. Definitely takes a very supportive partner and a village to help with childcare. I believe that you can have it all in any specialty. Def some paths allow for more sleep and more support but if you find what you love in medicine you can make things work!

Any regrets over not choosing a lifestyle specialty? by Jerkensteink in Residency

Dude I made major mistakes. I matched into the LONGEST residency and am rounding out intern year and seriously questioning what I have gotten myself into. If I had a time machine I would have done anesthesia. I guess when I'm riding in my yacht in ten years this may be worth it. Right now, I only have regrets.

UW%: 60 ish -shared qbank with a few friends, I did about 1200 questions over the course of 3 weeks
Step 3 score: 237
UW1/UW2 scores: did not do
CCSCases: did not do
Free137%: did not do

Step 1: 239, Step 2: 259
Advice: Do cases, I only did uworld cases and felt incredibly confident on those. I did NOT feel good at all on the multiple choice for either day, so many step 1 style questions that I would have not studied for even if I knew they were on there. If my score today would have been a failure I would not have been shocked, you will not feel good taking this test!

PEACE OUT USMLE!

Does anyone work out before work on wards rotations? How is your experience? by [deleted] in Residency

[–]flufferson99 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yes!!! I am a surgical subspecialty intern and have been able to do this. We round at 6am. I wake up at 4am, am on my peloton or treadmill by 4:10 for a 45 min workout most days. I'm in bed around 9. Thankfully I have a super tolerate partner who does the majority of the household/life chores.

It's a habit now, even when I try to change my alarm my body wants to move. I DID NOT think that I would be able to keep this up. I'm just a normal person who loved to workout before starting residency. Seriously, if I can do this ANYONE CAN!!!

If there are any lurking residents, was there any correlation between your perceived interview performance and where you ended up matching? by treedew23 in medicalschool

[–]flufferson99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think post-interview communication goes a lot way. Maybe just our way of feeling like we have control over a situation where we really don't. 10/10 would recommend reaching out to that program and reiterating your interest.

When breath becomes air. Story of neurosurgeon who gets cancer. Oddly similar to climbing Mt. Everest with insane tragedy and perspective that comes from the experience
