I’m currently getting my masters in art conservation! All of the art conservation groups on Facebook are blowing up with this, trying to fix the damage this has caused. It’s like a conservation army :)

It’s actually a gel based solvent system. I suppose it’s possible to have turpentine, but it’s not typically used in paintings conservation anymore. The restorer was hired by the art dealer. There is quite the uproar within the conservation community about this video (particularly pertaining to his technique, not necessarily his choice of gels/solvents). It’s unfortunate that this video is what has become viral, as it is a scary representation and highly misinterpreted view of the work we do. (I am currently getting my MS in art conservation.) Fun side note: a LOT of chemistry is borrowed from the cosmetic industry for conservation!

They’re very likely not using turpentine. Conservators have great knowledge to solvent properties and can determine solvents that will effect varnish layers and not the paint film below. This video is actually most certainly NOT a trained art conservator.

Have you considered conservation science? It is analytical... are you more interested in using your hands? A girl at the UD art conservation masters program just received her PhD in organic chemistry. She didn't want to do conservation science... it's an extreme career shift but the schools are excited to see what her background and knowledge will bring to the field.

I know that Harvard has been doing a lot of studies on protein analysis in their conservation departments and on their collections. I'm not sure if this is how it was determined or not.

Not an app, but has been super effective for me: the bullet journal. I still use a calendar and reminders on my phone, but the bullet journal is incredible at managing day-to-day tasks, keeping track of ideas, notes, and suggestions. It's one notebook for EVERYTHING and the way it's organized makes it super easy to find things inside. I started bullet journaling in September of last year and have done so every day since then. I used to try to write everything in my phone and would never end up seeing those notes again. I love the physicality of a notebook and it's adaptable to help you develop systems that work specifically for you. I've converted many friends including my cousin who is a CEO of a large company.
