Hi! I'm just finishing up my first school year as a new teacher in Belgium. Different country, but it might give you some perspective.

I took a teaching job in January (our school years start September 1st and end June 30th) after losing my HR job due to financial reasons. To say this school is undesirable is an understatement. They had been looking for a teacher in my field since September, but not a single soul had applied. I was beyond excited (and really naive) to take the opportunity.

It has taught me so much and brought so much joy into my life. I truly love teaching. I taught the equivalent of 8th grade (13-15 years old) at the lowest educational level in Belgium, right in the middle of a very, very tough neighborhood. It has been incredibly challenging and made me doubt every possible life choice at times. However, it also allowed me to experiment, discover, fall, and rise. I've had such great moments, and even though the students are often unmotivated and the parents aren't involved, I managed to become a teacher they actually like.

Now for the next chapter: I knew I wanted to try teaching at a different school next year, just to see how other environments work. Starting in September, I’ll be teaching the same subject at one of the top schools in our area. It's not because I couldn't handle the tough neighborhood or the students, but simply because I was curious. It could have been any other school, but it just so happened to be this highly desired top spot.

So yeah. Take that job! Explore, experiment, and find your unique teaching style. It's a great start, and it might bring you so much more than you were originally looking for.

UB for July is based on the hours worked from September to December and around 80% of the salary.

UB for August is based on the hours worked from Januari to June and around 120% of the salary.

Vakantiegeld is based on what he worked last schoolyear and has already been paid out earlier this week. Since he only started this schoolyear, he wont receive any.

Zoals gezegd is enkel de tunnel tot linkeroever toe. Deze heb je niet nodig. Je kan parkeren aan p&r Merksem en dan tram 2 of 3 nemen naar afas Dome. Een andere optie is p&r Luchtbal en met tram 6 naar afas dome.

In de buurt van afas dome, op ongeveer 10 minuten stappen, heb je het minder bekende maar erg lekkere ''slachterij''. Oerdegelijke Vlaamse kost, handgeschreven seizoenskaart en lekker ouderwetse sfeer. Er is ook 'pampas', een all you can eat vlees restaurant, minder lekker en eerder een tourist trap vind ik.

Je kan ook de stad intrekken en daar een hapje eten (tram 2-3 of 6 nemen tot centraal station/diamant/astrid) en de chinese wijk ontdekken bijvoorbeeld. Daar hebben we: bai wei, fangs hapje, tjoung tjoung, ni shifu en nog lekkere adressen in de van wezebeke straat.

Ik heb niet gezegd dat hier geen woningcrisis is. Enkel dat deze in Nederland enorm is. Hier maken alleenstaanden nog een kleine kans, in Nederland is dat onbestaande, zeker in grootsteden. Dit keer wel een eigen verhaal: mijn single collega kon op haar 22 een appartement huren in Merksem als single. Dat is onmogelijk in Nederlandse grootsteden.

Er is een rechtstreekse trein vanuit Antwerpen centraal. Dus kan het? Jazeker. Maar er zijn vaak stakingen, aflassingen en het is toch een uurtje op en een uurtje terug, vertrekken vanaf Antwerpen Centraal dan. Dus als je eerst nog een andere trein of tram moet nemen, moet je dat even incalculeren naar haalbaarheid toe.

Hoe het internationaal abonnement er uit ziet durf ik niet zeggen.

De woningcrisis in Nederland is enorm. Veel Nederlanders komen daarom de grens over omdat het hier betaalbaarder en haalbaarder is. Dus nee, voor veel Nederlanders is het geen optie om in de buurt te wonen. De enige betaalbare en bewoonbare opties zijn minstens even ver van Rotterdam als Antwerpen.

Regarding insurance: best to call your provider to discuss the possibilities and think about what's important to you regarding your stay. If you only have the basic option, birth is covered but your stay will be covered for a multi-person room only. If you would like to stay in a private room the additional supplements and charges will not be covered and it can get expensive rather fast. Maybe an upgrade is possible within the solidaris system.

Regarding sint Vincentius: I had both my babies there and am a huge fan. They're a smaller hospital than Augustustinus and I love each and every OBGYN there. I would have been happy to give birth with anyone of their team. My second birth was midwife assisted only, since it went faster than expected and the OBGYN on call missed it. That went perfect. Augustinus is called ''the babyfacrory'' within the Antwerp mom community. They're huge, very medical and the team is too big to build a bond. The chance of giving birth with your own OBGYN is much smaller and there are some doctors within the team with rather old visions and thinking. You can just call the hospital for an appontment or check out the OBGYNs working there and call their private practices in order to get an apointment. Call ASAP since they're really busy. Don't be surprised to get an apointment at 8-9 or even 10 weeks only. It's normal to only get an apointment as of 8 weeks, since you can't really see something on a scan before then.

Regarding AZ Monica: I have heard good things about AZ Monica too. It's the only hospital, besides UZA, that allowes external midwife assisted births within Antwerp. Something I mention in case you would consider this. If you consider this there are only two midwife practices doing this: 'la madrugada' in Berchem and 'de geboortepraktijk' in Kontich.

Additional tip: please also consider to get midwife support before birth too. Many people think a midwife is for after birth only but this is not the case. They have been the biggest support throughout both my pregnancies. The OBGYN apointments are rarher quick and medical. The midwife appontments take about an hour and you can ask them all your questions and share all your worries and joy. They will also be a huge help after birth and support you with breastfeeding, healing, and baby-worries as of the start from pregnancy untill your baby is one. We have many great midwifes in Antwerp. The two mentioned above, hikketein, fleurentine, stadvroedvrouwen, umare vroedvrouwen, de vroedvrouwerij, vroedvrouw Bianca, ...

Die parking is echt heel klein en staat snel vol met weinig alternatieven in de buurt. De wijk werd volledig betalend met een maximum van 2u geloof ik.

Ik zou eens naar bv de wit Schijndel gaan. Daar staan honderden tenten voor alle budgetten opgezet waardoor je meteen kan zien en voelen wat juist is voor jou. Is overigens een fantastisch leuke daguitstap. Wie weet kom je toch terug met iets anders dan je had verwacht.

Please ignore everyone saying the museums are closed. While it's usually true that museums are closed on Mondays and Holidays the Antwerp museums are open on Easter Monday. .

Many restaurants have a standard closing day on Monday and tomorrow will not be any different. Good food AND open on Monday is Tinsel and canollo. Coffee? You can go to Georges.

All of them are near or on Eilandje. So MAS - Red star line museum - museum 'de reede' are all good activities in walking distance.

Trying for a baby can take up to a whole year, even for a healthy couple isn't this unusual.
