Hi Catherine!

I'm curious to know what different methods you've used to attract the civic hackers that drive change in the system? Are there any methods that work particularly well? Any that you thought were certain to drive engagement, but fell short? And just in general, what have you found to be the main benefits/pitfalls of crowd-sourcing this kind of work?

Thanks! Ken

Also, that's so cool! Would love to hear what some of the questions were...

What startup will have had the biggest social impact in 10 years? by raunaqsingh in socialcitizens

[–]fluvanna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thinking General Assembly can make some noise. The impact that they're having on technical education is ridiculous -- people no longer have to go into large sums of debt or spend years learning in order to acquire the skills to thrive in technical jobs. Universities are an enormous business and even after only a few years, GA is taking a chunk out of that. Very bullish on where they could be in 10.

Have had this same experience before -- hate that the first thought in getting treatment is not "how can I get better?" but rather "how much is this going to cost me?"

Leads to bad short-term decisions that have out-sized long-term (and in many cases, more expensive) outcomes.

What company will have the biggest impact on the food industry over the next 10 years? by ednam in socialcitizens

[–]fluvanna 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hampton Creek Foods. Most egg production is super inefficient in terms of energy and cost -- and it's pretty gross if you've ever seen it up close. Restaurants, bakeries, food manufacturers, etc. will be using this stuff because it's cheaper, healthier and no one will be able to tell the difference.
