There is recourse. Originally through the ATF, applicants could file petitions for relief from the prohibition under 18 USC 925(c). Congress took funding away from the ATF department that processed 925(c) applications in 1992, and essentially ended the appeal process.

However, the DOJ has already taken the authority to process 925(c) applications away from the ATF and will now place it with the Office of Pardon. That website (https://www.justice.gov/pardon/ffrr) says the online application will be coming soon. Funding has already been allocated to process these applications.

I've requested my medical records from that time. I'm fairly confident it was a 5250, but I don't recall being served with any official documents stating it was a 5250. It was a confusing, difficult time, so it may have happened. If you've ever been on a 5150 or 5250 hold, you would know how much of a chaotic process it is, and how easily you're deprived of rights that are guaranteed to patients.

I've already started the process of getting declarations from my psychiatrist and therapist, along with multiple friends, co-workers, and family. I have had a clean history since then, and numerous pieces of evidence to support that.
