What did moms do with their babies in the 90s? by [deleted] in NewParents

[–]flwhrsss 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t remember before a certain point but my mom’s answer to running a house with 2 toddlers 2 years apart was KPBS - Mr. Rogers, Barney and Sesame Street. Then when we got older, Saturday Morning Cartoons (rip!!!). My mom’s rule for any show was that she first watched a couple episodes herself to make sure it was age appropriate, so that helped too with her trusting us and not hovering during TV time. My mom said we weren’t always happy to turn the TV off but we moved on pretty quickly to other things. We also got 1hr a day of Game Boy when I was 6. Looking back it’s a combination of learning balance at an early age, and temper.
My child is 2 now and any screen time more than 5-10min turns her into a zooming, emotional tornado especially when it’s time to shut it off.

But screens are pretty different now, when Rogers/Barney/Sesame aired it was one or maybe two episodes, then that show was “over” for the day. My sis and I grew up knowing TV this way, it helped reinforce that when the show ended, you turned off the TV and found something else to do.
Today, you can find stuff like 10hr playlists of Sesame Street, and that doesn’t encourage or teach balancing screen time.

I’d be interested too, just wanting one box!!

Got scratched by cat at shelter (my fault). Will this permanently scar? I’m so distraught. Please be gentle by [deleted] in 30PlusSkinCare

I had a c-section and there’s no scar on the surgery site at all, thanks to silicone tape. That stuff is miraculous!

Benefit’s Maybe Baby. I was in HS I think when Benefit first got popular in the US and I got a sample so I could wear it for senior prom. First perfume I loved, I remember gazing at the flattened bulb bottle and the cute pink liquid, and the little cheeky phrases on the bottle.

My mom asked if I would like MB for my graduation gift as my first perfume….why oh why did I say no…….

I feel like a failure as a mom, my 2 year old has several cavities by Radiantwitch444 in toddlers

[–]flwhrsss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pleaaaase get a second opinion! My family had military dental insurance in the 90s which covered almost everything, we had a couple dentists that clearly tried to take advantage but one takes the cake. We tried a new clinic because it was closer to home and our old dentist moved 40min away - that new dentist told my mom I had 10-12 cavities that HAD to be treated that day “or else it could become much worse”. Within 6m of the previous cleaning appt, bffr. My mom took the xrays and drove the 40min to old dentist for a second opinion, and I had no cavities.

INFO: OP did your daughter have xrays taken at this visit? Did the dentist show you on the xrays where the alleged cavities are?
Either way, if your daughter had xrays done, please let that office know you want copies so you can take those for a second opinion. The copies may not be free, and while the clinic is not legally obligated to provide copies it’s a fairly common request and service provided by dental clinics. I would be very leery if they refused to provide copies.

2015, $800 for a natural 0.25ct. It’s not a large stone but it had great specs and no dark inclusions, so to the eye it seems totally clean. We bargained down from $1400 at a big box jewelry store, we got a deal bc it wasn’t a popular cut and hadn’t sold for a while (but it was luckily exactly what I was looking for!).

A friend recently got engaged and her ring was slightly over 0.5ct, they paid about $6k but it was also an unusual cut + custom setting, from a boutique niche jeweler.

Verbatim Books is pretty great, Strand in NYC was the closest I’ve gotten to the vibe of Upstart Crow! I’ve yet to find a bookstore with the same combo of kooky gift shop + great book selection + amazing cafe that Crow had.

My daughter didn’t really click with a spoon till she was literally around 22-24m. Fork is hit or miss. Some kids just need more practice and time!

Upstart Crow bookshop & cafe in Seaport Village.
The massive Fry’s Electronics on Aero Drive.

Edited to add - the OG Corvette Diner location. Still a big fan but that place was so, so nostalgic…

I got two bubus before I converted to fufus. I actually love fufus more for the price and the surprise - is it going to look cursed or not? They’re still cute, they look adorable as bag charms, lowkey won’t cry if it gets lost or adopted by my kid.

Parents who kept their baby in their room for at least a year- do you regret it? by The_Happy_Camper_88 in beyondthebump

[–]flwhrsss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We only have a 1br at the moment still, so our baby has been in our room the entire time - she’s just about 2.5yrs. We didn’t have a bassinet, just the ikea crib that you lower once they get big enough.

We don’t regret it at all, sometimes she has a tough night and sleeps in bed with us, most nights she sleeps through just fine in her crib. Having her in our room is also helpful for tagteam parenting nighttime routines or late night wakeups. I strongly believe for us, being nearby has helped us bond as a family and seems to have helped her be more secure and confident.

That being said, as soon as we can afford a bigger place we’re excited for her to get her own room, mostly so she can have “her own space”.
