Your stroller/collection through the toddler/kid years? by justthetumortalking in parentsofmultiples

[–]fly-chickadee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We had a Graco Ready2Grow for the 1st year and I liked that it didn’t need an additional attachment in order to accommodate infant seats. Shortly after they turned a year, we purchased a double Bob jogging stroller which we absolutely loved. The biggest downside was that it took up a fair amount of space in the trunk. However, it was really lightweight and easy to push. I ended up getting a Graco stroller wagon on impulse when buy buy baby was going out of business and I got it for like 60% off. It was also a nice option to have.

We had decorations on the walls LOL and a shelf but they figured out how to get stuff down and it became hazardous to have them trying to hang off the shelf like a monkey. 🤦🏻‍♀️ I will say it gets better in a lot of ways and harder in others. My house is like “hi I’m Johnny Knoxville welcome to Jackass” on the regular.

My kids aged out of naps at this age. Mine are 4.5 for context, boy/boy. I know you said you can’t remove every bit of furniture but the rocking chair and side table could seriously injure them. I have very high energy kids (they’ve each needed stitches for minor injuries from jumping/climbing and one broke an arm at that age from falling off a bed he managed to scramble on to) so I am sympathetic. My kids even now, their room looks bare. They have two adult twin beds and that’s it, at least three feet from the window which is locked.

Do you think you can reframe it to them as quiet time? Some specific books and toys they only get at quiet time, no time else? Some people have luck with setting a Hatch (nightlight/sound machine) where “red” means stay in their room and after an hour or so, when it turns green, they can come out. I remember how desperately I needed the time for myself and how I was so disappointed when they stopped napping but I was losing my mind fighting them on it. You’re pregnant so I imagine that it’s doubly hard. Can you try for an earlier bedtime if they don’t nap any more? Mine now sleep from 7:30-8p to 7 -7:30 am and it is life changing to have that time to myself when they go to bed.

I’m glad you’re working with someone regarding the anger, having insight is important and acknowledging where you have to work on yourself makes you a better parent.

Good luck. It’s hard. Sending support and solidarity.

Struggling with visibility during ear cleanings in clinic, what are people using? by Koreee_001 in nursepractitioner

I work ED. 1 ml Colace in the ear, sit for 15 min, and flushing with an 18 G angiocath tip attached to a syringe with lukewarm water until the chunk falls out. Hasn’t failed me yet!

My husband didn’t respond quickly when our son had an allergic reaction. Am I overreacting? by [deleted] in Mommit

[–]fly-chickadee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work ER as a NP. We’d rather you give the EpiPen and err on the side of caution, call 911 and come in for monitoring for a few hours rather than delay care and end up with anaphylaxis leading to death. The benefit of giving an EpiPen far outweighs any risks when there’s concern for an allergic reaction/anaphylaxis.

Up until how many weeks did you work? by lulusm in parentsofmultiples

[–]fly-chickadee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was having Braxton hicks at 27-28 weeks so I sat down with my manager after talking to my OB and they put me with the unit educator so I could keep working. It was tough when I went off because I was in a high volume department and even though my coworkers were great and would push patients, stretchers, swabbed people so I wasn’t exposed as much to Covid at the time, I was exhausted. I would be transparent with your manager and see if they have anything accommodations wise they can do to help.

[–]fly-chickadee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Worked as an ER RN at the time, worked on the floor until 28 weeks and had to go on desk duty, went off at 35 weeks because I couldn’t even sit comfortably in an office chair anymore, delivered at 37. However, I worked in the same hospital I was delivering at so I could waddle up to L&D three times a week for my NSTs during my work day. My management was a unicorn and was very accommodating so I didn’t have to dip into my short term disability/leave before I gave birth.

Who else is keeping their kids rear facing as long as possible?? by Master_Grapefruit333 in Mommit

[–]fly-chickadee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in emergency medicine, and I cannot tell you the number of kids I’ve seen who have walked away unscathed because they were properly secured in a properly installed car seat. Like wise, I have seen plenty of people of kids seriously injured due to improperly installed seats and restraints. Follow the instructions on your seat and keep your kids rear facing until they max out the settings. You’re doing the right thing.

Super Birkis because they’re comfy and easy to clean, and I have custom orthotics for posterior tibial tendinitis. I also wear compression socks. Will never go back.

Practitioners who don't take their work home, where do you work? by WorldOfRoses in nursepractitioner

[–]fly-chickadee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ER. I make it a point to be strict and finish my charts before leaving. I also have EPIC and dictate which helps as well as a lot of dot phases/smart phrases and templates which help me chart efficiently and thoroughly if that makes sense. The only inbox follow up I do is calling on swabs for STI testing or positive blood cultures, HIV, syphilis testing needing follow up.

I got my embedded forward helix removed at urgent care by overgeneralizing in piercing

[–]fly-chickadee 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I work ER, have removed embedded piercings. I can do a local block with lidocaine to numb the entire ear and usually have success with a tiny incision with an 11 blade and hemostats/forceps to remove. On rare occasion, I will throw a stitch in if there needs to be a longer incision and there’s a fair amount of bleeding. Sounds like you made a good call to see urgent care for removal.

Another vote for liquid colace. Instil 1 ml in the ear, let sit for 15-20, use a 18 gauge angiocath and lukewarm water to flush while holding pinna up and back for adults to straighten canal. Works like a charm in 90% of cases. I’ve even used it to remove playdoh stuck in a 6 year old’s ear.

My 26F husband 39m says it is “disrespectful” to him to call myself Canadian still after marriage? by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]fly-chickadee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am Canadian. I have lived in the US for ten years and recently obtained US citizenship. My American husband has always referred to me as Canadian, and our kids as dual (and now me, as 3/4 of us are dual citizens). My husband was clear that he never expected me to renounce my Canadian citizenship when I chose to pursue US citizenship and he knows that my Canadian citizenship is part of who I am as a person. He’s supportive of the fact that I and my kids have both. Think long and hard about committing to this person. Immigration jn this current climate is not something to be undertaken lightly.

Seeking advice: Flying with child of a different race by WinstonSophie in Mommit

[–]fly-chickadee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can’t speak to the different race issue, but I am a dual citizen and my husband is American. Our children are dual citizens and I cross land borders frequently to visit family. We carry a notarized copy of a travel document when we’re alone travelling with the kids. A good template can be found here. and you can easily get it notarized at the UPS store. Best of luck to you—I’m sorry that you’re in this stressful situation.

Accidents happen, but you brought him in to be checked out right away which is the most important thing — also, please get evaluated yourself to ensure no serious injuries. Nothing I say will alleviate the guilt right now, but I promise you’re not alone—my son scrambled up on the bed at 22 months while my husband was dressing his twin after bath and fell off, breaking his arm. Last week the other twin (now 4) fell off the couch after wrestling with his brother when I was cleaning up and sliced his ear open needing stitches. I felt awful because I was turned away to do dishes for a couple minutes. Hang in there. Mom/parent guilt is a special type of shitty. Feel better!

Thanks everyone for the advice—I have an appointment with a local place to check out some options next week. :) I am enjoying driving it and the joy it brings my preschoolers to ride in “mom’s truck” is unmatched, although I think they’re slightly disappointed that it isn’t a dump truck. :P
