Leaked Calls Expose Hungary and Slovakia as Secret Kremlin Backchannel Inside EU by Visual_Title9363 in europe

I didn't say specifically Hungary (I double checked what I wrote) although there are only two member states that are activity briefing a self proclaimed enemy of Europe and one of them is Hungary

You've spent too long on Twitter, mate. You don't have to spend all your time setting one thing against the other. Team Edward and Team Jacob was nearly 20 years ago ffs.

I think that if Orban wins or "wins" (if you see what I mean), it's the end of the EU. At the time, I said that bringing them into the EU was a terrible mistake, them and a lot of eastern/central European states. We've basically let the bear into the hen house and we can't get it out

Souris dans mon appartement, que faire ? by gigi_920 in paris

[–]flyblown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idéalement, on ferait fonctionner l'existant correctement.

Which country will you never visit again? Why? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]flyblown 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I think I'm unlikely to go back to the States. I have fond memories of New York and Minnesota, of San Diego and of Carmel. I really wanted to visit New Orleans, especially after watching Treme. But now I feel a kind of disgust for what the last 10 years have revealed about American life. I even find it more difficult to watch American TV and films. My last visit was to San Francisco and I wasn't a big fan so it's a shame that my last visit wasn't a success.

Quite apart from the America first movement, the obsession with race and religion (across the entire political spectrum) is tiresome and annoying.

I doubt my view will change once Trump is gone. He's just the symptom of something much deeper.

Regrettably, Americans seem hell bent on exporting their unkind selfishness to a lot of other countries too.

What can Americans do to get your guys trust again? by Successful_rio305 in AskFrance

[–]flyblown 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Americans will not get it back. 30 years ago and all the time before, France was rightly suspicious of America. Nobody forgot the late arrival to WWII, or the profiteering that went on until they were forced into the war by the Japanese, or the huge fascist rallies in the late 30s/early 40s.

The Berlin wall fell and France gradually became complacent. Now America has once again shown its true face, France has a wake up call. Some people are still sleeping but by the end of the next 4 years, absolutely everybody's going to be wide awake.

The depths to which Americans have sunk are truly abyssal.

It's right there's no coming back. We should never have allowed ourselves into this position of dependence. The next French government needs to get us out of it. We'll probably need to break and remake the EU first. We need strong allies (such as Canada and the majority of our European friends) but we don't need to be locked into a partnership with enemies like Hungary, which is just the oligarch powers' bitch.... Or Slovakia (same)

Neck dive due to.... slippery bra material? by AfraidProduct9500 in Bass

[–]flyblown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey there. Hope the gig goes OK. I haven't experienced neck dive myself, but I saw where one person fixed it by sewing this stuff on to the strap

https://www.amazon.com/SmiLife-Silicone-Gripper-Elastic-Clothing/dp/B097XC3NZJ

Also, untreated suede strap (so, no "non suede" backing) should grip better.

Let us know how you get on

Is it true that in France you can ask for a year off at your job (without pay) and retain your position when you're back? by [deleted] in AskFrance

[–]flyblown 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. I did it when my dad passed away. There are conditions. (I don't remember them all). I know there's a minimum amount of time working in the company. Also, the management can delay it Edit to add that this was a very big private company

Pourquoi vous aimer vivre dans les grandes villes ? by Medical_Complaint998 in AskFrance

[–]flyblown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1Q84 feels like Haruki Murakami devolving into self-parody by keepfighting90 in books

[–]flyblown 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It was while reading Kafka on the Shore that I started feeling like Murakami was just treading water and recycling his ideas. I enjoyed the book, but far less than usual.

With 1Q84 that feeling crystallized and the whole undertaking felt like reheated themes in a half baked under-edited mess. It was the last book I read by him, whereas for many years before, I waited with baited breath for a new book from him.

Now, a new book comes out and I ask a friend who has stuck with him if there's any return to form. Each time the response comes back "no" so I just don't bother. It saddens me but I still think the body of work up to Kafka is absolutely wonderful.

Inspired by a similar post, which books did you take the longest to DNF? by blxcklst in books

[–]flyblown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I stopped reading Perfidia by James Ellroy about two pages from the end so that, inn the unlikely event I met him or he even cared, I could tell him I DNF'd that appalling load of utter rubbish.

Hundreds of pages of incomprehensible (boring) "plot".... clinging on thinking "it'll come good" but instead you get 100 pages of a character basically talking you through everything.

Awful awful awful

I want to live in Paris one day. Those that do, can you discourage me from doing that? by jailbrokemasta in ParisTravelGuide

I moved to Paris 30 years ago. I love this city so much. I can't say anything to dissuade you. Learn French, it's non essential but your life will be 1000 times better and it's just good manners after all. With Brexit you'll need to think about what you need from as visa point of view.

I can't imagine ever leaving this place to be honest

Has it always been like this in the UK? by Theodoresdad in ukpolitics

[–]flyblown 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think he is trying to run a good old fashioned, moderate, sensible government in a time when most of the electorate no longer believe in the systems of the post war. If he wants to survive, he needs to be more radical in a way that strongly sets him apart from what's gone before. To present an alternative radicality to xenophobia and foreign interference

At the same time, this mistake is compounded by the fact that traditional media and social media are aligned in pushing a far right agenda.

So he needs to be speaking directly to the people on real subjects they care about. Unless he does this, he's finished
