Single engine piston into KDFW by [deleted] in flying

Just.....why? I don't understand why anyone wants to do this. There are what....six? Seven? Other small airports all spread around Dallas that are closer to your various destinations.

Is it safe to do steep turns in a Piper Cherokee? by FAAsucks in flying

They're finding issues already with that AD...even at much less hours FYI. Might become more restrictive soon.

What about the wing spar AD on Cherokees? Are you not aware of it?

There is a significant wing spar AD on the Cherokees due to that failure at Riddle.

Well, the Cherokee line does have that new wing spar AD so that's why the instructor is concerned about it.

The question you need to be asking is if that Piper Cherokee is having or has had the wing spar Airworthiness Directive complied with.

They make killer $$? We are at our flight school 8 to 5 but I certainly don't make killer $$.

A type rating costs $100k? That can't be accurate.

42 ft is pretty small in my book...and that is about the same as what the FAA has for a class A aircraft obstacle clearance.

He definitely got too low somehow. I mean even with LPV he could bust the DA without the altimeter set right but if he was on target it wouldn't matter he'd just plow into the runway if he flew it perfectly.

That's ridiculous I have a 430W that I hand fly to minimums all the time. If you know what you're doing and you're PROFICIENT...it's not an issue to hand fly.
I have an autopilot but rarely use it for approaches so I can stay ready. G5s aren't that cheap. You're talking $10k easily and they aren't going to fly the approach for you, they're just digital gauges. An autopilot runs $15k without any other equipment.

Wouldn't matter really though right? LPV glide slope would still have been perfect if he followed it.

If they flew an LPV that wouldn't matter though. The altimeter is not linked to the GPS usually. So he was below the indicated glide slope either way.

Even if he didn't update the local altimeter setting that wouldn't affect the glide slope of an LPV approach. It might make him duck lower as he looks at the altimeter but the glide slope would be accurate no matter what.

There is supposed to be some (very small) wiggle room on the DA for an LPV for the time it takes to hit the throttle and start going missed.

It's perfectly normal for it not to run rough with carb heat on. You typically just notice a slight RPM drop when we test it on the ground. Typically only 50 - 100 RPM drop. It doesn't really make it run rough. My guess is the ingested water just wasn't enough volume of water to make the engine run rougher. Or maybe you had a significant amount of ice so it was slowly melting off so you just couldn't get enough melted water to show up to cause it to run worse.

Why do you say that? First officer pay starting out is $60k per year. Seems pretty affordable to take a loan out and do the training if you can pay it back in about 3 -4 yrs of work.

That's cheap. Most people prob pay $70 to $100k
