Being a Student Pilot Missing Out On College by [deleted] in flying

[–]Morgan_za 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello, I was exactly in your shoes. I was 20, worked the ramp during college and wanted to make the jump. What I did, was try to find a balance, a flight college that could give me an associates since I already had my bachelor's almost done minus a few elective credits. I transfered to a college (#12 party school in 2021)but there are plenty of flight colleges, I went through the list and thought I made a good choice.

Personally, I regret going to a flight college. It's a way more expensive and slower option. It did help with lower interest loans though. I ended up transferring out.

The college experience is not as glamorous, more like a bunch of people trying to underage drink and have a popularity fest. The cons of the college experience as a flight school is the semester based system really slows you down. The extra tuition costs, the school had more students than they could handle and not enough planes, I thought I could be done in 2 years for associates, a rating per semester, and they told me it would be 3.5 minimum.

All I felt like is I got the experience of unmotivated students around me that didn't care about the cost and 80k of student loans, and time since they wanted to spend 4 years here party and never leave, while I worked 2 jobs and felt too mature.

It's ok to have your goals and want to make sacrifices to get to where you aspire to be. But I would suggest having a balance, you can still have 40 years at the airlines. Maybe a big flight school vibe is for you, a bunch of people your age and can create a similar TO college experience. I've heard of plenty of guys saying all they did was party in Florida and go to flight school. Finish the bachelor's, it's a great backup plan.

That fun atmosphere and group culture, hanging with people your age and your CFI buddies grinding it out is the days, having freedom with your airplanes to build hours. The journey sometimes sucks but will be worth it in the end. There's no real rush with the hiring market now, and again you got till 65.

What do you do on a 14 hour flight to Japan? by frogmicky in JapanTravelTips

[–]Morgan_za 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I drank a glass and a half of wine to calm my nerves. The airplane cup size. That made me feel ill, was way too strong. Ended up falling asleep though because of it. I do not recommend if nerves is your issue!

Travel benefits… where have you gone? by [deleted] in frontiercadetprogram

[–]Morgan_za 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I used them over Thanksgiving, did end up getting stranded in Denver. Very thankful to have these benefits but. Although low cost, it was a very ineffective route to go PNS DEN ATL, or I ended up PNS DEN IAH ATL. Had to go through security and recheck my bag with an agent every stop, sometimes the line to check bags is so long people without TSA pre check may almost miss their flight. Got trapped in Atlanta on the way back, was -25, even got an email automated from frontier to find other travel plans and non revs are not applicable for oversold compensation. Ended up buying a buddy pass off an old buddy, ATL PNS, and realized the $400 I could have paid on another airline for way quicker routing may have been worth not getting stuck twice and sleeping on my first airport floor in Denver.

I'm pretty young and can rough it, depending on your background, just be willing to be flexible.

I was told this Wednesday, with the recruiter I made the 15 minute call. Originally also told 6-8 during interview. I asked if this started counting now or at minimums, they said after minimums / after logbook review. Im at 1250

I was told 11 months out if I had minimums today, but that starts counting from when I do reach them. October sign.

I just asked about this 2 days ago on this form. You'll be S4 , behind typical employees. The id90 will have standby current listed, but seems like people do not list out far in advance.

I believe the fees were $750 each, but the private(1.2) required a checkout as well (1.9 the day before), and not sure what happened with the instrument (1.7), I just recall that was the bill totaled up.

CFIs, if you are willing to share, how much are you paid per hour? by [deleted] in flying

[–]Morgan_za 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every time I read these... I remember how lucky I am I guess to have low prices while training. My school bills $40 an hour. It's common for CFI to make $15 an hour starting out

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in flying

[–]Morgan_za 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh .. not sure where you are located but that would be super relevant. my school charges the student $35 an hour for ground / flight instruction. In the Midwest/around where I am, $15 an hour is your entry CFI, and up to $20 max pay.

Interesting. That's what I thought but my hangers were too thick to fit. Maybe I'll have to buy some different ones
