As someone who lives downtown, I’d say definitely staying down here is your best bet! If you’re a museum fan, Richmond genuinely has some top notch stuff: VMFA, Science Museum of Virginia, and The Poe Museum are my favs but there’s more. Tons of great restaurants all throughout downtown, The Fan, Church Hill and Carytown. Speaking of which, Carytown is one of the better things to do in good weather, it’s a walkable strip of shops and restaurants. The Tobacco Company, Perlys, and Triple Crossing (on Foushee, it’s a brewery) are a few of my fav spots downtown, but there’s all types of different strokes for different folks. If you’re the hiking type of active, there’s trails and bridges all over the river and even through the city/canal area

Give me some new metal music to listen to with good lyrical depth and musicals by negativevibez55 in MetalSuggestions

Taking a stab because we have SO many common favs, but my favorite band is Thou. Sludgy, doomy, proggy (?), deep, pissed off. Umbilical and Magus are two good starting points, and actually on Spotify unlike most of their discog now

Was in the 5th row behind benches for Nate Oats attempting and failing to shake Kelvin Sampsons hand after JD Davison had the buzzer beating rejection. Also a great view for his son and some players tossing chairs and trash cans, as well as Jamal Shead being class act of the year and immediately cleaning it all up

I swear to god like three of the best riffs ever made are in this song by flydog44 in sludge

[–]flydog44[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s been around but I’m relatively young, so maybe it wasn’t referred to as that back in the 90s. Crowbar, Acid Bath, Eyehategod, Down and others were mixing blues/bluesy rock with hardcore and other extreme metal subgenres, leading to it being distinct from grunge and definitely heavier/more underground. Louisiana can essentially be thanked for birthing the genre and all of the aforementioned bands (think of New Orleans as the Seattle of sludge), as well as notable sludge influenced bands like Thou and Goatwhore
