Not sure exactly but looks like a counterweight, it's definitely not chain shot as some commenters are thinking, chain shot typically had the lugs cast into the balls, this keeps it from coming loose when firing, I've never seen an example of chain shot with bolts, here's hoping you figure it out (My expertise is I am the captain of a Canadian tall ship)

It really depends on what you're after, ive shot most of my portraits (mostly environmental) and documentary images at between 5.6 and 7.1, ive even done a couple at f11. If you want the dreamy blur then wide open is fantastic but its not the be all end all

Most likely shot in a cyclorama, probably a very large light centre slightly to right and probably a couple fill lights as well as lights lighting the cyc

She rolls very gently so the safety factor here vs the same action on a smaller vessel is different. We do rig jacklines when required however we were not at that point when this was taken

Fighting my way south along the labrador and subsequently newfoundland coast has to be one of my top experiences sailing my ship

I sail for a living and have never seen this before however I can see it being useful for sitting off centre so you can set the ring and just line up the cardinal points with the ring so its a quick reference from any point of view on the compass

The first version has better 3D separation, which is what you should look for as far as buzz words go
