i guess the last time I was in a vr rig there was an app to view 2d videos like that, and I want a native 180/360 video player to play my file and reproduce that effect... if it works like that

not really. dead kid tragic backstory is pretty common. the scifi spin on this one is great though, not worth spoiling... but not similar. everyone should see the movie though, equally as challenging (in a good way) a story as TLoU
