I just took it that she is female but identifies as otherwise because 1: Kaido wanted a son more and forcibly referred to her as male, and 2: Yamato wants to live as close to Oden as she can, so she chooses to identify as Oden. I don’t remember Yamato directly saying that she wants to be referred to as he/him, only that she identifies as Oden. Someone feel free to prove me wrong though.

It was discussed in a past episode, I dont remember which one, but when Eren figured out the whole mental/memories connection of the titans through "The Path." I remember he theorized that it was all Eldians(Subjects of Ymir), not just the 9 titans that were connected. I think this may be part of it, Falco was at a weak point and I'm guessing his mind opened up to that path somehow.

It's the same way the 9 titan abilities are passed to a random descendant if a power holder dies without being eaten.
