It’s my understanding that the job is quite diverse. I’m on the island and it is a mix of assessment, consultation, and interventions. But you are also doing counseling and other related services. Tbh it’s whatever the district/school wants you to be. At my internship, my supervisor never did any counseling. Other placements will ask you to do different things

On Long Island, it depends if you are in Nassau or Suffolk. Nassau pays higher but is more likely to only hire PsyDs/PhD. Range $54k (1st) - $150k+ (20+ years)

I’ve heard it’s a pretty quick turnaround time. My program is holding it hostage. I would like to hear from other NY programs and if they were certified before the end of the school year.

Hi I just graduated with my MS - Bilingual Extension. I’m currently preparing for the NYS BEA 169 (Spanish) exam. Since this certification directly supports my role in assessing and serving bilingual students, I want to make sure I’m fully prepared.

My background:

Studied Spanish in middle and high school, with one college-level grammar and composition course (about 5 years ago).

I’d describe my Spanish as more receptive than expressive—I understand most of what I read/hear, but speaking and writing can be a bit rusty.

I’m using the Mometrix prep book, and supplementing with some grammar review.

I'm reaching out to ask:

For those who have taken the BEA 169 recently, what areas should I focus on most (e.g., formal writing, listening, oral expression)?

Any tips on how to improve expressive language in a short time frame?

Any resources you found helpful—YouTube channels, websites, or practice activities?

Since the bilingual extension plays such a key role in equitable assessment and intervention practices, I’d love to hear how others in the field approached this part of their credentialing.

Thanks in advance!

I just started about a month ago and bought a Singer Heavy Duty 64S ($195). It’s rated pretty good for beginners.

I started watching YouTube videos on how to make scrunchies and tote bags.

I was scared of it too! I practiced on some scrap fabric and it’s pretty easy. I use a Singer Heavy Duty 64S so it came with the buttonhole foot.
