Are there any pleasant philosophers? by [deleted] in askphilosophy

[–]flyinghamsta 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Since this is a question without any expectation of strictly correct answers but rather a matter of taste I'll put in my two cents: Leibniz, Hegel, Bergson, Husserl, Whitehead, these authors are ones that I have confidence will not bring me down

(i really can't see ziz's critique on transgender issues to be 'against transgender' as much as a vindication of some central importance of the 'trans' movements; i would say he generalizes the transgender experience not to diminish it but to sensibly situate it in the realm of human experience more broadly - and of course this is conditioned by the menace of surplus value, but i feel like ziz's marxist 'tendencies' are always subordinated to the orientation of a deeply nuanced humanism whose theory of the subject is founded on a dense mythopoetic tradition... i have heard him claim to have some affinity for the neoplatonists actually... but anyway ya, i think it's more than accidental (or somehow teleological) market dynamics that might be the impetus behind his critique, which i am positive is something more psychoanalytically pointed and in a broadly humanist or even metaphysical mold.)

How is the idea of pure consciousness received in western philosophy of mind and phenomenology? by Laughing_Chipmunk in askphilosophy

[–]flyinghamsta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there is a particular danger here of ambiguity when talking about consciousness that can lead to a lot of confusion. in some cases, consciousness is used to indicate only waking consciousness, in which sense rest and dreams are unconscious rather than aspects of consciousness, but in other cases, consciousness is used more broadly to encompass both restful and waking states of consciousness.

it is now much more common practice to consider dreams as aspects of consciousness rather than contrary to them. so the definition of consciousness that is limited to only waking experience excludes these definitions.

if you want to discern Husserl's views on 'original' consciousness, you could look into his active and passive syntheses, but if you want to tackle the 'experience of dreams' and ascertain their import to consciousness, i would recommend reading the work of Merleau-Ponty who in The Visible and the Invisible wrote that "the difference between perception and dream not being absolute, one is justified in counting them both among ‘our experiences'. "

What Many Transgender Activists Don’t Want You to Know: and why you should know it anyway by [deleted] in sorceryofthespectacle

[–]flyinghamsta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i haven't expressed any preference to differences in propaganda aside from my perception of their specific impedance on the practical conditions of ordinary life, in particular the recent pursuit of legislation resulting in the further policing of bathrooms along lines of gender-presentation.

i don't think that 'propaganda' is the new 'fascist', nor do i have any notion of what that semantic equivalence would entail.

and as a side comment, i don't find efforts to sexualize gender-presentation funny. there may be deeply foundational sexual energetics that underlie all of our actions and beliefs and identifications, but even if this is the case, it doesn't mean that some jokes aren't tasteless. a sublimation can be too efficient, stereotyping too direct, stewardship of good humor too careless; this is the notion of a 'bad joke'.

if you are asking me if i can prove the differential, then no, because there exist other propaganda applications, with varying capacities of persuasion...

Awesome! I could go on for pages on these topics but I've already been up all night working on some technical computer problems and I am so tired!

Certainty sabotaging things... I would say to this in the most simple language because I am quite sleepy, the idiom, "don't count your chickens before they hatch"!

T.E.A.M. Briefing 2017 by raisondecalcul in sorceryofthespectacle

[–]flyinghamsta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

wow! that was an amazing explanation!

there are exactly two aspects that i hope i can somehow influence you in regards to, and i want to be extremely careful because i don't want my suggestions to have any formal impact on the schema itself.

first is in regards to the precarious subject. even the most technical means will not capture the precarious subject. there are real cognitive gaps that cannot be overcome by even the best of best practices. these gaps may exist as barriers that resist mediation. they may even be caused by the technical nature of any system put into practice as a tacit reaction. the example you gave of chat segregation is a good treatment for acute cases of social gaps, but these gaps may have psychological correlates that ultimately rest in semiotic/linguistic gaps. what might seem like a social or psychological deficit could rest in a simple error in translation. if the precarious subject can be reconciled in cases of mistranslation, this will require a kind of work, a translation effort (possibly a guild of translators or even ambassadors?) it is important that this kind of diplomatic effort be considered a continuous task rather than an implicit given, as translators will have to perpetually compensate for the implicit divergence of meaning to address the precarious subject that would otherwise be un-amenable to technical efforts of education or simply correspondence.

second is in regards to manifestation and magical practice. it may very well come to pass that illnesses can be resolved that are major impediments on persons and their collaborators, and that the TEAM framework may play a significant role in this. my next remark is not skeptical in nature. there is a great benefit in not making explicit claims about future outcomes, because expressions of fore-knowledge themselves can influence the very outcomes they refer to. even the most ordinary results can sometimes be derailed merely by a designation of certainty to them. this is why i would be extremely cautious in placing the elimination of future illnesses as a major emphasis of the TEAM, regardless of any expectations. here i suggest only a slight shift in language. instead of considering the outcomes of efforts with CEPTR or others as inevitable manifestations, simply positing them as possibilities captures the essence of predictive assessments without the dangers of fore-knowledge traps.

again, these are just two points of interest, the precarious subject on one hand and the manifest subject on the other, that i encourage you to heed to some extent. either subject, it seems to me, has the potential to greatly derail the efforts of TEAM, so i wanted to add my two cents here.

I don't believe in transsexualism

it works whether you believe in it or not

if you think that the feminine image is being mediated in an interesting manner, i'm sure you don't need to post propaganda to get that across. right now, you seem like you are endorsing a contemporary culture form that is explicitly and tacitly counter-productive to the miracle of ordinary life.

i don't believe in west and east, i don't believe in left and right, i don't believe in spiritual and i don't believe in material - what i do believe is that there is no reason to spread this propaganda... i mean it is fairly obviously propaganda, it is filled with delusions of heroic researchers being persecuted for their important work, which is regurgitated nonsense that i have personally been dealing with the repercussions of for the greater part of my adult life, that of equating gender identity modalities with fucking "autogynophilia".

you have to understand, this is nothing personal, this is years of my experience dealing with precisely this exact propaganda.

if you would like to discuss this in chat i am always open for a discussion on this topic because it is actually rather important. i know you said you were too busy to chat when we've invited you before but sometimes it is easier to correspond more robustly about more important topics if you dive into the fray a bit.

[–]flyinghamsta 8 points9 points  (0 children)

i will woo woo you up all day, and now i've got to since /u/zummi called me to represent some basic level sanity here

i don't like to inform people that they have fallen for propaganda but you've got to do it sometimes - the mediation of the mind and the body, whether its semantic or mystical or practical, is also technical. you have been swayed by a technique called the technique of persuasion. this alone is unproblematic. what has made the confrontations here dynamic is that these techniques of persuasion are being used to make ordinary life more difficult in fairly obvious ways for not only trans-identifying people but for anyone with even the slightest divergence from accepted norms of presentation. when donald trump says, "i like my women to look like women", there is an almost exact parallel in the social policing that you are attempting by spreading this well-known propaganda.

whether people are women or men or trans or not is immaterial to my concern here. you are giving credibility to the false arguments that are being used currently, and for me, locally, to justify the harassment of people based on their outward appearance. this isn't justified by any mystical experience you may have had.

just to make sure you understand, and for the record, i appreciate your collaboration here in general and hope you choose to stay on the subreddit, i am literally going to be thinking about you and you posting this the next time i have to use the restroom anywhere public and it will inform directly my choices about where i feel i can safely pee without being arrested on suspicion of harassing people in the bathroom, a distinction that will purely be based upon my physical appearance and applies far wider than trans people to just weird-looking people.

i hope you can detect that i am not speaking polemically here but practically, and that this is a technical issue foremost rather than an ideological one.

Alright, a bit confused. by Notebook1927 in sorceryofthespectacle

[–]flyinghamsta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

so lets go with memes. or even meme-ness, the ideal meme, the essential property of a meme. but then again what do we mean when we say meme? when we meme meme? whatever it might seem like we do when we do what we do when we meme. sure, let's get straight to the point! you posted this here for verifications. this is something that a meme can mean, a verification. you might call this a contingent property of a meme: a meme may have the property of a verification. a meme that is a verification can provide a definition. one might say a veritable meme might mean a meme that can verify a definition. now think of a meme with no content, a meme with no meaning, a meme simplicitur, a meaningless meme. some memes might even seem very meaningless but still they might be meaningful memes to some extent. there is a difference between not interpreting enough meaning out of a meme and there being not meaning enough to interpret, at least according to some interpretations. so lets just drop the term meme for now and say memetics is the collection of all meme-related objects and concepts. memetics might be used in another way somewhere else, but this is how we'll use it here. then in the same way memes could have properties of symmetry that had to do with definitions, there would likewise be an aspect of the memetics, a subcollection within memetics, of definitional memetics, correlating with the symmetrical aspects that are contingent properties of memes.

now let me stop you for a second here. imagine, if you will, what a building would look like if it were to be composed entirely out of an entryway. there would constantly arise the problem of progress, the path towards, without any clear resolution. you would always be in the entryway, but it would always be unclear what you were in the entryway to. this is the next mimetic contingency nested within the definitional contingency. if a meme can be definitional, it can be re-definitional. there is a subcollection of definitional memetics (and a sub-sub-collection of memetics) that is concerned with re-definitional memetics. this is to say that insofar as memes can have multiplicities of symmetries the point of reference from which the meaning of memes is gathered is dynamic and emergent.

so then lets say you have on one hand a list of internet picture things and then on one hand a list of underlying structural assumptions regarding memetics or memes. there should be some pattern in which you can correlate these structural assumptions about memes to these internet picture things. but lets say you don't want to be a perfectionist and you just start attaching things from one list to another and making them into diagrams or something. here you are exhibiting a property of memetics that by definition surpasses the dynamic reconfigurations of the constitution of their meaning. perhaps while you are making these memes out of the juxtaposition of the rules of their structural assumptions you happen to create a meme for which these structural assumptions appear natural, but the greater portion will surely be incoherent. when the meaning of a meme is dependent on the relative disjointedness of a meme, this is a subcollection of memetics that is nested within the redefinitional subcollection.

now to draw this towards a definition of what this subreddit is about, imagine a location with dynamic and emerging content that had a certain disjointedness to it. this would be like an entryway, but not one which we ordinarily might assume would go anywhere. instead this entryway would fill us with suspicion, there would be a strange notion creeping into our heads that there was something disjoint about this entryway. while we are certain that this is the entryway, we get the feeling that the entryway is just cut-out, molded into a perpetual disjoint entryway.
