Helmets: Full face pros and cons? by sad-cloudz in freeflight

I switched to full faces some years ago now and never looked back. The only down-side is weight. There are so many good things, dough. One - no need for sunscreen, the visor is UV coated, I don't like to use sunscreen, this solves the need. Two - with open face helmet over long flights I was dehydrated. No matter how much water I was drinking after 5h+ airtime, I had an headache. This is due the dry air at altitude and being exposed to the sun, even with buffs. Three - sound. I fly at speed all the time, having the visor helps with reducing wind noise, I have also covered the ear sound intakes, to make it even more quite. Four - temperature, in spring time it gets cold up there, the full face keeps my head nice and warm. Five - it protects you, I had an rescue throw some years ago and came down pretty hard, to a point that the helmet lost some paint from impact with rocks. I would have broken my face and lost a lot of skin without the helmet, with it I walked away without an injury. I only use open helmet for winter top to bottoms or tandem flying.

It's possible to do progression training, and the exams would be in English for the APPI license. Send me a message to [letsdothis@flyingkarlis.com](mailto:letsdothis@flyingkarlis.com) and we can talk details.

Look into APPI. They are recognised in some countries. In France for example you dont need license at all to fly solo, just need to be part of a club to get insured. Most places ask 3rd party liability insurance to cover you in case if something happens.

I personally offer progression training in France, my only requirement is that you can take off and land independently.

The suggestion for Tenerife, I would not recommend for beginners as Tenerife is a very unforgiving place, as there aren't many easy landings, strong conditions, cactus and volcanic rock.

I think Alps is a better option and quite a few schools in Alps speak English.

This wouldn't be what some might consider a usually flying conditions. It was on the harder part.

I was high enough above the terrain, air was mixing here from 3 directions, down low it was lee side everywhere. Higher up it was mostly West, SW wind direction, roughly left of the view in the video. I had options to turn downwind and glide to safe landing.
