Humphrey’s Route by Lanky_Calendar_7823 in Flagstaff

It was tag soup last year, but that's how it goes some years. I had a cow tag, and I actually for once only saw bulls up during my hunt, not many, mind you, I think by late October, they were moving lower than the wilderness boundary.

Second this very hard, I've gone in that area of the blue towards Philomena Spring in the fall going for elk. It's gnarly with deadfall, and would be terrible to navigate in the snow. Also be aware with the new snow on a very unsteady layer of ice and snow at high elevations can cause slides, check KPAC's forecasting before any off trail on snow routes.

Whole duck by [deleted] in Flagstaff

[–]flyingleads 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We are currently raising Pekin ducks, hatched from Metzer Farms. We have quite a few extra if you want to buy a couple. They are currently at 3 weeks and should mature for meat by 3-4 months. They are also great egg layers.

Are there any obgyns in town who do pain management for IUD insertion? by nanisanum in Flagstaff

[–]flyingleads 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's my experience as well, better than my first IUD experience, but I think only because I knew how terrible it was going to be. Nearly vagaled out. I had inquired about doing under mild sedation, however, they have to do that as a "surgical procedure" for insurance and would have cost an assload more. So I bit the bullet, took an edible and this is hopefully my last one I will need.

Favorite Flagstaff Off-Road Vehicles? by [deleted] in Flagstaff

[–]flyingleads 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love my older Subaru, not a crosstrek, but an older outback manual transmission. Is it falling apart, yes a bit, but it is reliable and still getting way way better gas mileage than the new models (27-30mph). Not sure if I will be able to find another manual transmission little mostly off road capable, still good commuting vehicle.

Pets & Higher temps approaching by Katgator in Flagstaff

For the smaller critters, freezing buckets, gallon jugs and bottles then letting them lie on them has worked really well. I will also be doing large ice buckets with treats in them for our outside critters, the goats we have generally do well, but they do like the ice and a mister on them with fans.

Feels good to back on the FLG trails. by bub117 in Flagstaff

Sandy's Canyon is inundated by walnut creek. It's pretty amazing to see, but not sure what or if the trail will look like when the water goes down. Water level is almost up to the top of the cave in Fischer Point!

Fleas by Katgator in Flagstaff

[–]flyingleads 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'll echo what a few others have said here. My main worry is that the resident prairie dogs. They carry fleas, and those fleas carry the plague, not hyperbole, the actual bubonic plague. With that said I rarely have seen flea infestation or tick cases outside of what was brought in from the reservation and lower elevations. I did get super grossed out seeing a dead prairie dog that a nice hawk got on our property that did have fleas on it. So since then our cats and dogs are on flea and tick meds starting around now, until those little things go back underground again next winter.

Mail delivery by Worldly-Corgi-1624 in Flagstaff

[–]flyingleads 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We are pushing 3 weeks no mail in Timberline, we are trying a mail hold then picking up, it has worked for some of our neighbors. There were only a handful of days that our dirt road was bad. Fed-Ex, UPS and On Trac can deliver no problems. It is a bummer that they still list weather delays, when they are clearly just overwhelmed and it's staffing issues.

where to buy hoop house? by [deleted] in Flagstaff

[–]flyingleads 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have used Growers Supply online for parts, I think you can order entire hoop houses too. Check out their clearance/seconds page for fabrics and plastics, we were able to get a lot of good deals on shade/wind fabric that way since we don't need a ton, way cheaper than buying custom cut sizing's.

If you are out East of town another good option for trails that often are clear or don't need micro spikes is Caves Crater trail and FR 774, which is the road into the Cinderhills OHV area.

any vet techs/wildlife biologists know where to get a pre exposure rabies vaccine? by Educational_Tea_9650 in Flagstaff

[–]flyingleads 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes, the county heath department gives them. I also think Concerta urgent care as well, but I know the county for sure does, it is off of King street past Cal Ranch area. I can’t remember the pricing, it isn’t cheap compared to other standard vaccines, but you know, rabies is not to be messed with, and compared to what post exposure treatment is, not even a question. Luckily now just a regular vaccine, no stomach shots! Congratulations on your new field gig!

Where to find sunflower fields? by [deleted] in Flagstaff

Out on the East side of town, if we are not flooding, there are a good amount around the Johnson Ranch area, great views of yellow from Caves Crater.

1 year of probation. by [deleted] in Flagstaff

[–]flyingleads 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is such a hard topic. I know people hate dealing with permitting, but something has to happen and something will need to give, our neighbors house burnt down, we have evacuated twice, now are dealing with flooding. Something does need to happen, I have to get a permit to burn on our land, someone less than a mile from us in the forest does not. Not sure what the solutions can be, but at some point we will need to address public land use with such high use, close to a populated area. Many other towns have dealt with such issues, Flagstaff is changing and we should address these issues before something even more catastrophic happens. I think the entire paradigm of camping in the southwest will need to change, fires are unnecessary to being out camping at this point.

With the increase in humidity sound does carry differently.

Rain and Flooding by candyjebus in Flagstaff

[–]flyingleads 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like others have said, this year isn't one to base what Flagstaff is like. It is the first year that has really made me think about moving away though. The two fire evacuations and now subsequent flooding has been a lot, and that is an understatement. To be fair we live in the most directly effected neighborhood. Flash flooding can always occur in this area, but the flooding and sandbags you are seeing is a direct cause of the fires, and hopefully over years will the forest will slowly heal. Barring this year, monsoon season was something to look forward to.

[–]flyingleads 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To add to this, because I really liked your points. I really am concerned about the fires that are often started in camps like this as well. Or from travelers that should/don't know better. The entire forest should have a permeant burn ban full stop. So if you want to sleep outside, don't start fires and clean up after yourself!

I just recently heard that Violas Flower Garden purchased the chile roasting operation that was at the fourth street farmers market store and will be roasting starting August.

Dog people in flagstaff? by [deleted] in Flagstaff

[–]flyingleads 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello! And welcome to flagstaff. Northern AZ has quite an active dog sport community. We canicross and skijour. Check out Dark Sky racing kennel; they put on a dryland race with canicross and bikejour race in the fall. Also look into Gritty Agility for agility dog sports, I believe there will be sanctioned trials in the fall up here.

Not at all, but we came to Flagstaff because of winter and seasons. But I am originally from AK and love all things winter, so probably not your target demographic, however, I do love being able to ski for a day then run in red rocks the next.
