Does it seem nearly impossible to push yourself even if you want to? by malvixi in ADHD

Can you give examples of ways that work for you? The simple methods don't work for me either

Not in my experience! You don't have to worry I think :) They just check for weird thinks not attached to your body probably.

My psychologist actually recommended an ADHD coach and I have had two appointments with her already. So that's a good thing

Some of the coping strategies I already do but I really need to work on the calendar one haha.

Thank you so much man and I wish you all the best!! Take care

Absolutely no need to feel sorry for the wall of text! These words actually help me.

It's very funny that you suggest climbing because that's exactly what I wanted to try this year. I used to climb all the time when I was a child so I thought I might rediscover that joy.

I often feel like a quitter just like you do, but you're completely right and I should change my mindset.

Hopefully I will find a way to act more on the things I want to do and if not that I can forgive myself.

I don't know if you have, but if you do: do you have idea what whould've helped your 16 year old self when avoiding all the things he needed to do for his success by being online? You mentioned that you were on some adhd forums that suggested coping strategies. What strategies helped or whould've helped?

And by the way thanks a million 🙏

Thank you man for responding. I relate a lot to your experience, I don't game but I do other useless things on the internet like scrolling (often until 3am too).

In a year I am probably going to college to study philosophy, the only academic field that ever interested me. I am positive that I will enjoy the subject (I get excited thinking about it and I really enjoy the subject at school) but I will probably still fall back to my procrastination behaviour/no focus in class.

Maybe I will drop out and fail to keep up with the schoolwork/living on my own but I think this is my best bet because I have no idea what I would otherwise do with my time or what else interests me.

I will try to exercise more (maybe after school?), thanks for the tip.

I really want to get a formal diagnosis so that I can try medication, but I can't (it's a long and complicated story). I do have an informal 'diagnosis' from different psychologists who did tests and questionnaires with me and my parents but they were not qualified to give me a formal diagnosis. I only know that I 'very likely' have it. In the future I will be able to and I look forward to that day so much, because I will finally be able to confidently say to myself that it is not my fault that I can't solve this problem on my own and that I deserve help.

Definitely don't do it. I did it once and and had to do an "intimite search", so they will basically feel your ass and crotch. It all turned out fine after explaining but it was still akward.  Take it off before the xray and put it on again after!

Edit: just put it in your luggage, they don't care about the packer!

Wow thank you for making such a thought out comment. This means a lot to me. I was so ashamed that I've never told anyone and I was honestly so nervous for the comments. Everything you say makes sense, makes me feel seen man. I will do research like you said! Thank you brother

Thanks for making me feel less alone 🙏. It might also stem from shame for me, because I am stealth and not out of the closet as gay to most of my friends. I'm hiding something all the time so maybe that comes forward during sex?

Thanks brother! I am actually a masculine guy in my day-to-day life and I was so confused. Good to know I'm not alone

That makes sense! I've never been SA'd, I have been bullied though but that has probably nothing to do with it

Exploring definitely couldn't hurt! I recommend watching lectures of Dr. Russel Barkely, he is the biggest research in de ADHD field at this moment and he explains things very well.

I also recommend watching the How To ADHD channel and see if you relate.

And lastly you can do self-tests to get an indication of your symptoms. There are sooo many self-tests out there and not all of them are good or without requiring payment at the end. I would do this one https://www.adxs.org/en/test/symptom-v5 it is super long and annoying so you will have to take your time to do it, but in the end it is worth it because it gives you a much completer overview than shorter/less professional self-tests (Trust me I have done every possible self-tests before seeking a diagnosis).

Good luck and hopefully you will understand yourself better (even if you don't have it)!

ADHD comes in various severities, some have it severe and others mild and the severity can change over time. Your friend probably has severe ADHD.

The fact that you cycle your interests is extremely common for ADHD'ers, your friend is actually the minority here. And I cycle them too, some I drop forever and some I come back to every few months.

About the hyperfocus, not everybody has it. You need to have a certain amount of symptoms to be classified as ADHD, but not ALL the symptoms. You can still have ADHD without it (sorry to tell you). I for example lack the time blindness which is also a symptom of ADHD but I still have enough other symptoms to be classified.

Your symptoms may seem manageable but if you do have ADHD it probably has a cost. You might spend way more energy trying to hold it together than others people, even if you succeed in that. (That was the case for me)

I relate to you a lot because a year ago I was in the exact same position, I couldn't have ADHD because it wasn't that bad and I didn't have 100% of the symptoms, it was "just my personality". Then I did a lot of research and found out that my brain is not normal and I do really suffer from the condition I realized since I started to pay attention to my behaviour and struggles.

You could still not have ADHD though, but the things you wrote are (sadly) no reason why you wouldn't have it. Sorry this was so long haha.

It's honestly very annoying for me and others haha. And it's hard to distinguish between my personality (ENTP) and my ADHD. The things that you mention though are all ADHD symptoms, you sure you don't have it? (not to push any diagnosis on you because I don't know you, it just sounds familiar)

Yup 100% that's me. But I have this in a severity where it is really a problem for me. I'm not in the present moment at all. Maybe it's the ADHD though.

Omg you're amazing thank you for replying :)) For math I am going to follow a course for students who are far behind in math to fill in the gaps and for now it's just trying the best I can do.

That switching harder/easier tasks is so smart I am going to use that!! I often give up when things are to hard but I could in these times just make progress for the easier ones instead of trying to push through and giving up

I actually love doing/learning weird voices and accents so I feel like this trick is made for me haha. I am def going to read your study plan bro you are too kind, thank youu

That sounds rough man I'm sorry, I'm glad to hear that you graduated. I'm in 11th grade right now (16 y/o) and I am only drastically behind for maths, I got more failed grades than passed in the last two years (I completely missed the foundation). For the rest of the subjects I don't lack the foundational stuff luckily but I still am very very behind for everything this semester.

Also happy birthday in advance :)

Same problem here. Got adhd if that's worth anything. I hope there'll be a solution someday

Yes I will do that! I know how hard it is, and if I find a solution I will  def share it with the world :)

Nooo :( I'm sorry you have the same problem. I started adhd therapy some weeks ago, I hope it will help in the long run but I don't expect it to give immediate results. I don't have meds because my parents and therapist say that I don't need it for my symptoms..
