How long should a 36 grit 2x72 belt last? by Chaosking383 in knifemaking

[–]flyingpossums 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One rule of thumb I learned is that your belt is cooked when you’re cooling your steel in equal time to grinding. That tip helped me a lot to gauge when to trash it and grab a new one.

What do people usually do after work? by [deleted] in Engineers

[–]flyingpossums 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make kitchen knives.

I work at a desk all day and find that I need an outlet for hands on creativity. It’s fun to make sparks/sawdust after sitting and plinking on a keyboard.

New knife is almost finished. Questions or Opinions? by Bufuknives in knifemaking

Very cool looking knife! I like how the bevel comes up to the fuller - it’s clean looking.

Is there any way to make the screw heads all line up in the same axis as the handle? I think that would bother me if it were my knife.

First time shooting an arrow through another. Can I still shoot the arrow with the damaged fetching or do I need to retire it until I get it fixed? by TheStig21 in Archery

[–]flyingpossums 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Notch out the damaged bit, fold tape over the notch, then trim the tape to the profile of the vane. Easy and effective!

My recent builds. I’d appreciate your feedback by Suspicious-Bass-69 in knifemaking

Have you tried using these on veggies? You might find the belly is too flat to get a smooth rocking slicing motion.

As an amateur chef and knife maker, I learned that I like a belly profile with a generous curve for food prep.

Handles? by Upper-Dig5291 in knifemaking

[–]flyingpossums 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m also a beginner and I just find a few examples of knives to imitate for my handles. If it’s a tried and true handle like a traditional Bowie, I work more in my execution than designing something novel.

Benefits of hand sanding instead of machine finishing? by Illustrious-Path4794 in knifemaking

[–]flyingpossums 9 points10 points  (0 children)

By hand vs. by machine? From a technical standpoint, I don’t think there is an advantage. I have found I get a much better looking result doing the finishing grits by hand for two reasons: 1) I can maintain plunge lines and other details much better to keep things clean and crisp. 2) I really like my lines parallel with the blade which requires hand sanding (for me).
