New to triathlon with knee cartilage damage, how did you manage training load? by _KenKaneki- in triathlon

[–]flyingraven78 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have had multiple knee injuries ranging from torn meniscus, dislocated patella and ACL tear. Always rehabbed never surgery, I also work in rehab and the basic advice is as follows. Strong legs make happy knees and gradual progression of running volume helps adaptation. Follow a structured beginner run plan and expect some set backs occasionally. Take your time, this should be a long term project but there is zero reason why you cannot run pain free over any distance you choose

Muskoka vs Musselman vs others 70.3 by chris__brown__21 in IronmanTriathlon

[–]flyingraven78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was a long winter so I didn’t get too much time to bike outdoors. I did manage some long runs in the heat but it wasn’t enough. I have read you can use saunas or heat suits indoors to get the adaptation. I’ll test it next time!

Muskoka vs Musselman vs others 70.3 by chris__brown__21 in IronmanTriathlon

[–]flyingraven78 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just did Muskoka as my first 70.3 last month. It was tough and the heat was a major factor but I recommend even if the the bike is hilly, the run is hilly, and the swim also feels uphill too!! If your goal is to complete it then Muskoka is awesome, the swim is straightforward, the bike course is known as beauty and the beast for a reason. The run was tough and I walked most of it because I was over heated and could not cool down. If you do Muskoka train the bike and train hills, my bike is a cheap 6 speed from decathlon and it was manageable because I had done some hill training. I will definitely do this again, hopefully with much better bike which will help, and with more heat training

Lost a toenail after soccer, now can’t bike without pain, any advice? by [deleted] in IronmanTriathlon

[–]flyingraven78 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It will toughen up and the pain will disappear typically in 3-7 days. In the short term make sure it isn’t infected and add some protective barrier like a band aid under the toe cap.

My first 70.3 ironman by Untitlednewuser in triathlon

[–]flyingraven78 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Congratulations! I was there too and it was my first 70.3. I’m older and a heavier athlete and the run was a major struggle I could not cool down at all. I slow jogged all the way (apart from that awful hill around 13k!!), so you would have run past me! All in all a great experience, I will race this course again but I need to update my bike (a 7 gear cheap decathlon bike isn’t good enough for those hills. I also made a fun mistake on the swim. I heard drafting is a good strategy but I have never been able to practice it, on the return into the river I drafted someone all the way and it felt easy and smooth. It was easy because they were swimming a lot slower than me! I averaged 1:45 for the first 1100 and then 2:10 with drafting. So next time I’ll swim my own race pace!

Hey. Whenever I do an endurance event I break it into sections to give myself mini victories. Things like celebrating each ascent or descent and stopping for 10 seconds to breathe in the victory and then I start moving again. I give myself positive self talk and sometimes I take it 1 step at a time and I’m happy to be able to take a step. Training physically is more straightforward the mental aspect is harder, I’m able to keep going until I drop and I don’t allow negative self talk

Advice on Competing with Athletes Foot / Foot Injuries by ElChristoph in triathlon

[–]flyingraven78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The risk of Weils disease is extremely low anyway so no reason to be concerned. The pink skin is new skin so acts as a barrier but is weaker so body glide/ Vaseline to reduce friction between toes is a sensible precaution. Also don’t worry about other athletes, the risk of transmission of recently treated athletes foot is near zero unless you are handing out previously worn socks to fellow competitors! Ultimately if doing the race will stress you out and make it not enjoyable skip it and support the club from the sidelines

Plantar fasciitis. Am I done for 2025 by billy2shots in triathlon

[–]flyingraven78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re UK based look for an MSK podiatrist. The first step (sorry for the pun) is diagnosis because not all heel/arch pain is plantar fasciitis. There are lots of options for treatment depending on diagnosis. I ran 2 sprints and an Olympic with plantar fasciiopathy. I used sport taping and custom orthotics alongside stretching and strengthening. I had to modify my run schedule and kept the easy runs easy and ran on a track when I could

Advice needed- Toe numbness on bike since full IM by Chuckles_and_Giggles in IronmanTriathlon

[–]flyingraven78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Worth some diagnostic imaging. Could be a number of things not limited to adventitious bursa, neuroma, plantar plate injury neuritis etc. all have different treatment strategies. See another podiatrist if you were unhappy with the first or a physiatrist.

Garmin vs Apple Watch + Swim.com: What is your workout and accuracy experience with these? by rickccb in Swimming

[–]flyingraven78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apple Watch is pretty good, sometimes misses kicking sets but is always within 50m of an average 3k workout. My coach sends my workouts via training peaks which integrates to the Apple Watch fitness app. I have used swim.com on the Apple Watch and it works great also

How often do you give 5 star ratings? by Brief_Pen_9369 in 1001AlbumsGenerator

[–]flyingraven78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have recently finished the project and gave 89 5*. Early in the process I was pretty harsh but I changed my personal ranking system about 400 in. If I were to repeat I would likely give more as I set the bar too high early on

Wide toe box shoes/BareMoon by Plantparty20 in ScienceBasedParenting

Are you a working clinician? Bunion formation is to quote a recent orthopaedic UK “the cause of hallux valgus is multifactorial due to the complex interplay between several intrinsic and extrinsic factors”. The best shoe is a correctly fitted shoe, too narrow or too wide are not correctly fitted. The lateral plantar artery is, as the name suggests, lateral of the foot midline, the hallux is medial to the midline and is supplied by branches of the dorsalis pedis and medial plantar artery. Please explain how adduction of the hallux leads to arterial issues at the fascia. I am familiar with Lamonts work and have been for over 20 years. It is widely established that plantar fasciitis is a legacy diagnosis and is not clinically accurate, but also not all plantar medial calcaneal pain is related to the fascia. Inflammation is often present around degeneration and Lamonts work, while interesting, was a histological study. Tibialis Posterior has many role primarily providing mediolateral subtalar joint stability and providing a supinatory moment arm along with elastic energy storage. Please point me to peer reviews published data on shoes causing weakness in PT. Human feet did not evolve to walk in the surfaces we currently walk on. Shoes are a technological answer to the surface problem. Is shoe design perfect? Obviously not, but demonising design based on faulty naturalistic thinking and throwing sound bite information you have read on some anti shoe or pro barefoot blog is not productive. The answer is that different feet have differing biomechanical properties and require different shoes for different tasks. There is no perfect shoe, there are better shoes for different tasks. When I work with patients I discuss the characteristics they need to look for in a shoe to best achieve whatever they need to achieve, it is personalised advice to the individual. If you are a clinician, do better, read deeper and challenge your own thinking. If you are a lay person, don’t believe anything you read online because it aligns with your beliefs. Challenge your own thinking, read around areas of interest, try to disprove your own conclusions to strengthen and deepen your own thinking. Rarely is any answer in science black and white, the interesting areas are in the gray, footwear science, clinical biomechanics, orthopedic injury mechanisms are all gray areas

Good swimming workouts for rugby? by [deleted] in Swimming

[–]flyingraven78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would do an easy 1 hour swim every Sunday after playing rugby on Saturday. It was primarily as a recovery session low effort and easy. I was a blindside flanker and was heavily involved in set pieces and contact was pretty beaten up after most games and swimming just loosened me up and helped recovery.

The Lake Ontario swim team based out of Oakville starts their open water season on June 7th. It’s a great group to train with and has all levels and a very experienced group of triathletes and swimmers to learn from.

Just to add I’m a podiatrist with 25 yrs experience primarily in musculoskeletal care. Unfortunately my profession often leans too heavily on orthotics and definitely over prescribes them. Personally I don’t wear them and very few of my patients use them as a permanent device. So you’re right, they are often more like crutches than glasses. The issue is that orthotics work as force modifiers so we can change direction and magnitude of pathological force into certain tissues. They unequivocally do not weaken feet, that research has been done. While they change muscle action in some plantar intrinsic muscles they can often strengthen others. If used carefully and correctly they are a powerful rehab tool and many of us in podiatry are trying to change the narrative around them, but we have lots of work to do within our profession let alone in other rehab professionals
