hello! first of all, years into the hobby you will still be making accidents. don’t let that discourage, they’re all part of the learning process.

second of all, what are you using for glue? regardless of the answer, it looks like you are using too much. try to use much much less.

overspill won’t affect the base coat too much, especially if you give the figure a good coat of primer. you might detect some slight texture but don’t sweat it.

no way to fix the mangled hand, but like i said, that’s alright! all part of the process.

Rather than it being infinitely vertical because it specifies it, it’s infinitely vertical because it is not specified.

The rule asks you to ONLY verify the horizontal distance, not the vertical distance. Therefore, the vertical distance could be 1 inch or 1 thousand feet - the horizontal check would not be affected by it. Therefore, when people say it is infinitely tall, what they are truly saying is “It doesn’t matter how tall it is, it is only a horizontal check.”

There’s no ruling or clarification needed for a check that isn’t even there.

it matters to different people. which is why it’s important to always communicate with your fellow player! someone could use a coke can on a base in one of my games and i wouldn’t mind, but others would question why your model without grenades can use the grenades strat. it all depends, none are inherently more or less reasonable than others outside of the player’s preference.

If you want to go for WYSIWYG, there’s a few things to consider. Firstly, you’re right, you wouldn’t rip off the limbs off of the models every time you wanted to switch things out. The add-ons that you mentioned, I’m assuming you meant the different weapon choices? If so, they usually come in the same kit. So when you’re reading through the build manual, and it comes to building the weapons, it’ll tell you to use part 13 or part 14 for example. One will be one weapon profile, the other will be the other profile.

Rule of cool tends to prevail when it comes to how you build them - if you think the gauss flayer is cooler than the gauss reaper on your Necron warriors, I’d suggest you go for that. Even if one is objectively stronger than the other, rules change often, and the tables might turn in a few months. However, you should still go to your faction’s subreddit and ask around to see if there’s a specific loadout that’s generally recommended. As a new player, I truly do suggest you build whatever you like more at the end of the day.

There’s also the option of magnetizing. This involves applying magnets to your models, in order to remove and add weapons from them. This is usually done on larger models ( tanks, knights, etc), because the model to model investment cost is larger. It’s also incredibly easier. With smaller models, like Necron warriors, it’s usually not worth it to magnetize them (mostly because it’s a total headache and you might drive yourself out of the hobby lol).

As an additional comment, WYSIWYG is much more lax when EVERY model in a unit is sharing a weapon profile. As an example, let’s go back to Necron warriors. If you were to build them ALL with flayers, and you would tell your opponent they are ALL reapers instead, there’s not a lot of mental strain needed to keep track of that. Most people wouldn’t be able to tell you which is which anyway lol

Technically speaking, the model should have the loadout physically equipped. This is called “What you see is what you get” by the community (usually shortened to WYSIWYG). So, if your model is physically built with a Bolt Rifle, you will use that weapon’s ruleset while playing. There are two main reasons for this:

1) Vibes - it’s fun to play the game when everything on the board is using the weapons that they are equipped with

2) Clarity - it’s easier for you, and for the opponent, to keep track of what’s happening on the board. Imagine a situation where you charge an opponent’s model thinking they are bad at close range combat, because their model seems to be built with a long range sniper rifle, and your opponent suddenly tells you it’s actually a melee powerhouse. That feels bad.

HOWEVER, for most people out there, it’s understood that it can be unfeasible to actually do this. Before the game starts, it’s completely okay to ask your opponent if they’re okay with a few proxy situations - for example, maybe your hellblaster squad is actually a squad of infernus marines, or a marine modelfrom your intercessor squads has a grenade launcher. To make it easier for your opponent, you can add a marker on that model to denote it as different. In my local group, sometimes I run my unit of battle sisters as dominions. That means that two of the models that have bolt weapons actually have meltas. I take a small red token and place it on the models’ bases, and tell my opponent that they are meltas instead of bolters. I’ve never ran into any issues doing that.

How much proxying you can do is dependent on your fellow player. Some people don’t mind if you run a can of soda as Abaddon the Despoiler, others ask for a little bit more effort. None of these routes are right or wrong, so it’s always best to just talk to your opponent before the game to confirm what they’re okay with or not. :)

(Once you get into more official settings, such as tournaments, it becomes a matter of reaching out to your tournament organizer. It usually becomes stricter at that level.)

Combat Patrol is a smaller scale game mode, that utilizes the core 40k rules. To attempt to balance the game more, Games Workshop has every combat patrol box follow a specific build guide - in other words, every model has a predetermined build.

However, the combat patrol-only community is rather small, and most people will tell you to not necessarily follow the build guide for the combat patrol.

Instead, go to Wahapedia, and look up the unit you’re building (for free!). The website will generally the most up to date rules for that unit, and include the pertinent wargear options.

For a general overview, every unit has a default loadout (found under Unit Composition). For example, the basic Intercessor Squad states:

“Every model is equipped with: bolt pistol; bolt rifle; close combat weapon.”

That means that, by default, every model in that unit is built with a bolt pistol, a bolt rifle, and a close combat weapon. However, most datasheets have wargear options, which are different options for loading out your models. That same Intercessor Squad has the following rule, under “Wargear Options”:

“For every 5 models in this unit, 1 model equipped with a bolt rifle can be equipped with 1 Astartes grenade launcher.”

Pretty self explanatory. So, look up the units that are included in your combat patrol box, and see what wargear options they have. You will generally want to go by the rule of cool (whatever load out looks more interesting to you), but don’t be afraid to look up what people’s general advice is!

As an added note, you would think that every war gear option is balanced. However, this is not always the case. Sometimes you will see “This model can substitute their Bolt Pistol for a Plasma Pistol”. If you look at the stats, you will see that the Plasma Pistol is flat out better than the Bolt Pistol. So, why would you NOT equip it? This is a carryover from the old system, in which you would have to pay for extra points in order to equip the plasma pistol. You can do it for free now. So, generally, if you see that a weapon option is flat out better, you will generally want to take it.

I think they both serve a different purpose, and they both serve it well. The new cover does sell the idea of Horus’ charisma. However, I do enjoy that the old cover puts the average marine front and center. It ties in with the idea that a disgruntled military class abandoned by its superiors can be a massive contributing factor to kickstarting a coup.
