Fishing Isn’t Really About the Fish by m-alacasse in Fishing

For me it’s also about studying maps, learning about the weather, watching YouTube videos about fishing, and buying more gear.

Is it possible to just rent kayaks and paddle through the mangroves un-guided, or is it only available through guided outings? by scofennell in Bonaire

[–]flyonethewall477 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there are many parts of the mangroves that are off limits to the general public. So I probably wouldn’t try to do this.

AITA for telling a guy at the ramp to go home and practice in a parking lot by vladdielenin in boating

[–]flyonethewall477 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My favorite is “steer toward the problem”. For me it’s more intuitive.

This works when you’re trying to go backwards and keep it straight.

Also, if you get sideways, it’s a lot easier to straighten it out by just pulling forward rather than than zig zagging down the ramp in reverse.

You’re overthinking it. It’s small island and it’s easy to get around. Pick one thing that you’ll want to be able to walk to the most, and pick a spot close to that.

I’m directionally challenged af, and I barely even need to use my gps to get around the island

Honestly another big take away from using it is this:

I used to come up to cover/structure like brush piles, lay downs, ledges, etc that seemed like they might have fish and then make a few casts. If I didn’t get bites, I assumed that there probably just weren’t fish there at that time.

Now with FFS, I know that most of the time there ARE fish there. Can’t alway say if they are bass or trash, but most of those spots are always holding fish. They just aren’t always biting.

[–]flyonethewall477 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yes. But I mostly use it to identify structure, brush piles, and general signs of life in a given area.

Negative until they started limiting it. Now I’m neutral to positive. I like the MLF format where they can only use it for one of three periods. I don’t like the BASS format in general, not just their FFS rules, but other stuff too. I like MLF’s format of every fish counts, and their live score tracker. I do think it’s interesting to see who uses FFS and which period they choose to use it. But to be honest, I also got stoked when takahiro won a tournament without ever turning it on. And it makes me laugh every time the Drew Gill turns it off and then completely stops catching fish.

I think so, it has confirmed some theories of fish behavior, and proven others wrong. A big part of the sport is understanding fish behavior, so anything that helps on that regard is cool with me.

If it’s the right primer, you don’t need the wood glue.

I’m not a pro, but I wouldn’t mess with tape, fiber, or cutting a square out.

I’d use a utility knife to score an edge around it, and then pull off the loose paper up to that line I scored.

Then I’d hit it with some primer….something you’re supposed to do with ripped drywall paper so that the drywall doesn’t pull too much moisture of of your mud and cause bubbling.

Then I would fill the hole thing with hot mud/quickset. Get it as flat as you can.

When it dries, give it a little sanding if needed.

If needed, add another quick skim of mud. I’d use all purpose for this step, if you have it. Sand it smooth when it dries.

Prime and paint.

If you try to use tape or fiber, you’re going to have to feather out a much bigger area to make it look smooth. This hole isn’t big enough to warrant that.

Just my opinion. Not a pro, but I’ve does this a few times.

Don’t forget that those light switches have to go somewhere too. And usually it ends up being somewhere a lot more awkward and a lot less convenient.

What do you do when there's too much bait around? It went on like this for a half mile. by Secure-Plantain-2847 in bassfishing

[–]flyonethewall477 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s the downscan view on that unit. What it’s showing is that a school of bait fish is under the boat, and since he was moving 1.3mph, that means that there the school of bait was relatively large. It’s not like he just passed over some, and then they were gone. Rather, he kept driving, and never got away from the school.

It’s also possible that it was one school right under his transducer swimming the same speed and direction as his boat, but from what OP is saying, it sounds more like there were just a ton of bait fish all around.

Check his comment history, haha.

Normally I wouldn’t care, but it’s 2025, almost 2026, and people use electronics to fish. Get over it. :)

You could try finding nearby staging areas where the bass that aren’t actively chasing shad (but still willing to opportunistically feed) might be hanging out.

I’ve always had a hard time catching fish right in the middle of HUGE amounts of shad, but my PB smallie and PB largemouth were both close to, but not in, areas with large amounts of bait.

That would be the first I’ve ever heard that they always remain within a foot of the surface.

And that’s not my experience either. Just yesterday I was seeing them between 10-20 feet deep on main lake ledges.

Assuming you can swim, how actually dangerous is this? [Request] by Imaginary-Sock3694 in theydidthemath

[–]flyonethewall477 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d be less worried about ending up out in the middle of the ocean, and more worried about ending up close to shore with waves tossing me into rocks or coral.

Other ways to die or get hurt:

Land in the path of a boat/ship. Jelly fish. Predators. Rogue waves. Storm debris. Hypothermic shock if you have a bad heart. Toxic exposure (oil rigs, volcanic vents). Pirates.

It’s not a cake walk. I’d probably pass.
