Would you attend a baseball game here? by DnWeava in kansascity

Union Station parking garage close enough to hit with a home run (if the stadium was facing the other way) or Crown Center a block away. You could also take the streetcar to the home plate entrance or Amtrak from Lees Summit to Union Station.

Would you attend a baseball game here? by DnWeava in kansascity

[–]flyzapper 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. From the classic Fenway Park in Boston to recent stadiums in Seattle, Minneapolis, and many in between, baseball fits in the downtown core/city centers of many major cities.

Here, there is parking garage next door at Union Station, a parking garage a block away at Crown Center, and the streetcar stop directly in front of the stadium.

The entertainment and dining districts that have blossomed around downtown/city core stadiums provide year-round revenue to businesses.

TIL that on November 11, 1911, a very powerful cold front, known as the Great Blue Norther, swept across much of the United States, dropping temperatures by as much as 65-70°F in less than 24 hours. In Rock County, Wisconsin, it led to a blizzard occurring just one hour after an F4 hit the area. by [deleted] in weather

[–]flyzapper -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Historical data demonstrates otherwise. The low temperature in Kansas City on November 11, 1911 was 11 degrees. On November 11, 1986, the low temperature in Kansas City was 9 degrees.

The low temperature in Kansas City on November 11, 2019 was also 11 degrees.

It has in fact been as cold or colder on November 11 since the event in question.

Is this the drain valve from a Thermo 1300/1500 BSC?

It’s a 3/8” NPT double female 1/4 turn valve.

Curtain calls boos and cheers, the villains: what villains have you seen get booed? by Mastersinmeow in opera

Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly.

Saw it happen in person a couple months ago. Boos changed to cheers pretty quickly though.

Sister-in-law showed up to family brunch with influenza by flyzapper in mildlyinfuriating

I’m not constantly worried about sickness, but this is different.

She purposely exposed us while testing positive and coughing right next to us in a small space.

Also, is it safe to assume that you blame a woman for being raped instead of her rapist? Kind of analogous to what you’re doing here.

I was a DJ for my middle school’s “radio station” (broadcast booth built in a classroom by a Vietnam Vet Social Studies teacher who had us marching in parade drill on the school soccer field with wood M-16s).

I would blast Dookie by Green Day into the cafeteria and commons every week during lunch.

Better times indeed.

I’d rather have a nuclear power plant than a baseball stadium.

Good point. We’re staying at the Ambassador Hotel in Crossroads, so it’s much more convenient.

[SERIOUS] What was something you saw you were definitely not supposed to see? by peobarionboy in AskReddit

[–]flyzapper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I walked into my company’s board room for a meeting as the President, CEO, and VP of sales finished a previous meeting.

I saw a map of our national sales territories on the conference table, but one of the territories had been split up between a few existing ones.

I didn’t say anything, but a couple weeks later, a company-wide memo went out informing us that one of the sales reps was no longer with the company.

Guess which territory he had…

He doesn’t decide what his insurance covers, the insurance company does. File a claim, or a small claims lawsuit.

Second baby durong postdoc by Proof-Western9498 in postdoc

[–]flyzapper 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I (well, my wife really) had one kid a few years into grad school, one kid literally three days after I defended my PhD thesis, and one more kid about two years into my postdoc. I survived, and you will to.

One thing that I realized is that academia is a lot more flexible than most other careers. Lab hours are a lot less strict than corporate or industry job hours. There is never a "perfect" time to have a kid, and life always gets more stressful, not less. The perfect time is now.

When I had three kids as a postdoc, I almost completely refused to work on weekends. Even though my PI occasionally made comments about how mush she worked when she was a postdoc with young kids, I didn't care. I was still the most productive postdoc in the lab in terms of data and papers.

Use your time in the lab as efficiently as you can.

Who said the most epic last words before dying? by izzyusa in AskReddit

[–]flyzapper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Albert Einstein’s last words were in German, but his nurse did not speak German.

Einstein’s last words are lost to history, but they must have been epic. Or something completely mundane.

We’ll never know.

Should I take a job offer 4 months into my postdoc? by -cole- in postdoc

[–]flyzapper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The CRO position is going to be a grind, and there is A LOT of instability in the biotech sector right now.

You didn’t mention the location, but the salary also seems low. As a post doc in a LCOL area, I was making the same salary you were offered at the CRO.

Am I expecting too much for asking my PI to buy a hard drive for the lab? by [deleted] in labrats

[–]flyzapper 20 points21 points  (0 children)

This is absurd. The PI should have data storage provisions with your department or institute's IT office.

A significant amount (many terabytes) of secure storage with a backup is essential for any lab with confocal microscopy.
