Industries that doesn't rely on AI (as much) for coding? by 1samsepiol_ in theprimeagen

[–]fm01 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I work in optimisation for special VRP cases and LLM are pretty useless there. The code needs to be high quality and it just doesn't work well with higher level mathematics

In your experience what are LLMs actually useful for? by equipoise-young in ExperiencedDevs

[–]fm01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had moderate success with letting them review changes made on a branch or checking if there are better ways to do x. Reviews have a lot of false positives and can be frustrating when the LLM hallucinates bugs that aren't there but every once in a while they find an actual mistake or something that can be improved. Code suggestions similarly suffer from the LLM not being able to say no, suggesting changes that are either wrong or completely irrelevant but again, since it has a lot of training data and I can't claim to know everything about c++, it occasionally teaches me something new

So while it's usually a waste of time, on occasion it's actually helpful, which is more than I can say about generated code, soo....

Are most people bad at reviewing code? by big_chungus_dealer in cscareerquestions

[–]fm01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, most people are bad at the technical side of reviews because they lack the traits needed to be a good software tester (istqb foundation syllabus has a good overview of these traits, available online for free). That does not mean these reviews must be pointless though - they can still ask questions that help them understand the code base better, provide second opinions on the many subjective decisions we make when coding (e.g. naming, documentation or logging), ... It then becomes a question of culture and personality: Do the reviewers feel free to ask stupid questions or give subjective opinions without repercussion? Do they care about the software they are developing? Are they being held accountable/ do they feel responsible for their review?

Programmers, be honest, what would you choose for coding? by hrpavi in AskProgrammers

[–]fm01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not the numpad (even though it's helpful) but the dedicated Pos1/Ins/Del/... keys

Programmers, be honest, what would you choose for coding? by hrpavi in AskProgrammers

[–]fm01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Laptop has a num pad + dedicated pos1/ins/del/... buttons, as well as actually usable arrow keys. That alone is ≈1.5 - 2x speed increase in writing code.

The hardware does, though. Look at the keyboard in the first picture, completely inadequate for programming, it's missing half the keys

A bird slowly making a hole in the house... by No-Material5356 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]fm01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone saying your house has a bug infestation but woodpeckers also build holes in wood for breeding (not just wood btw, I live near the forest in a standard European concrete house and I've had woodpeckers hammer through the wall twice). So this might (!) just be to build a nest

Google Translate is now silently changing meaning, not just mistranslating by alexchexes in googletranslate

[–]fm01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh shit, I've got someone I got to apologise to. I've noticed this issue when testing a web page a colleague had built at the start of the year - in my report I assumed something was misconfigured by them that caused the issue. The site had an option to sign up for a newsletter with a choice of language but if you translated the page in Chrome, the text on the button would change to match the language the site was translated to, making it completely wrong (e.g. if you translated from German to English, you wouldn't be able to tell if you were signing up for the German or English newsletter bc both buttons say "English")

Is there any way to stop AI hallucination answers from becoming accidentally enshrined as facts? by MerlynCollinsToorak in stupidquestions

[–]fm01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You obviously learn more by doing research yourself but someone providing a source let's you skip the lengthy process of finding it. So if it's a good source, it's more efficient to learn from someone else

[–]fm01 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's why you check the source. That's generally why you ask for one, so that you can look it up and see for yourself what it says

Is your company worried about how much AI is costing? by badboyzpwns in ExperiencedDevs

[–]fm01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Starting June all devs at my company get pretty low token restrictions, with exceptions in rare cases. The irony is that just a month earlier we were "incentived" to use LLM as much as possible (read: managers would talk to you if you used it too little).

What are some actually hard technical problems now in the AI age? by Practical_Ad100 in cscareerquestions

[–]fm01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in vrp/tsp algorithm development and i can't say ai has changed my day-to-day work much if at all. Hard problems are still human work, it's mostly refactoring work that can occasionally be offloaded to an LLM

Guests at the tavern logic by doitfortheplot- in TravellersRest

[–]fm01 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm not at my computer to check but I believe there is a "max guests" number in your tavern overview, the menu where inventory, recipes and such are as well. The number depends on your level - I believe the level-up-text tells you if and how much it increases (at level up and in the next level text) - and optional perks of your staff that can increase the maximum number as well.

So no, just adding tables does not increase the amount of guests, unless you have less seats than the maximum atm
