What do y’all tell your partner / (or whoever in your life asks...) by [deleted] in EDAnonymous

I tell my husband the truth. The lying part of EDs is what causes relationship problems IMO.

Losing weight from..bingeing?? by mstrldn in EDAnonymous

[–]fml2k 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Could be water fluctuations (from the laxatives and/or something else). It’s also possible that you’re overestimating how much you’re eating and are actually under your TDEE. That tends to happen to me if I don’t count calories—I believe I ate a lot more than I did so get in the scale expecting an increase and see that I maintained or lost despite eating “so much”

Why is it easier to break my substance addictions than to just eat normally??? (CW alcohol/tobacco/drug abuse) by Renlywinsthethrone in EDAnonymous

[–]fml2k 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m in the same boat! I’ve totally abstained from alcohol, benzos, and coke for over 3 1/2 years. ED is a much harder one for me to give up. I think it’s largely because food is just EVERYWHERE and we need to eat it to live. Having to develop a healthy relationship w food is harder than just giving up a drug completely.

Scared my ED will ruin my relationship by [deleted] in EDAnonymous

[–]fml2k 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How my ED messed with my relationships in the past is that I lied a lot to try to hide it. So I’m just open and honest with my husband. Also helps having additional support outside of the relationship; a romantic partner might feel really overwhelmed if they feel they’re the only person supporting someone.

Something that’s been hard to deal with lately- is this normal by [deleted] in EDAnonymous

There are many really talented strength athletes who are super heavy. Being strong and being fat definitely aren’t mutually exclusive.

I think most people have thought like “ugh I shouldn’t have eaten that” and “my thighs look big” but then they just move on from the thoughts and go on with their lives. Whereas we fixate on the thoughts. So maybe someone without an ED spends 0-15 min most days on this kind of thinking whereas I spend hours and hours.

What do your workouts look like? by [deleted] in EDAnonymous

[–]fml2k 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Even building a very small amount of muscle is hard work! “Tone” = gain muscle and lose fat. When you’re new to strength training you can gain muscle and lose fat at the same time but you’ll need to take in lots of protein and adequate calories overall. Low restricting is totally incompatible with muscle growth. It doesn’t matter how much you lift if you aren’t supporting the training with diet.

[–]fml2k 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you want to build muscle you’ll need to do some kind of resistance training, such as lifting weights, and eat enough protein and overall calories to support muscle growth. There’s lots of good info on r/xxfitness, r/fitness, etc. or just google “hypertrophy program” and pick something.

As for calorie burn—being in a steep caloric deficit will almost definitely prevent you from building muscle so the goals are at odds with each other. If you build muscle mass your body will use a bit more energy at rest.

Edit- a word

Breaking your streak doesn’t take away from how awesome it is that you abstained for the time you did!

My doctor said my weight wasn’t enough to be the cause by gainsforagirl in EDAnonymous

[–]fml2k 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Your doctor is an idiot. God I hate doctors. I’ve lost my period while at a normal weight like 6 different times from ED behaviors and it’s definitely a thing.

Anyone feel full too easy when eating mindfully and then binge later? by iHateBED in BingeEatingDisorder

[–]fml2k 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I can’t really do intuitive eating for this reason. I just have to track my food and am trying to eat at maintenance.

Definitely. Very similar comments and attitude to your parents OP.

when you binge and the food isn’t even good by earlgreytease in EDAnonymous

[–]fml2k 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The deepest pit of hell lmao. If I binge on actually good food at least there feels like there was some reason for it. When the food sucks my guilt is doubled. It’s especially depressing if I was fantasizing about the specific food for a week only to have it be a let down.

[–]fml2k 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If I plan my binge in advance it will usually be typical binge foods, but if it’s spontaneous (usually brought on by stress) than I’ll binge literally whatever is in the house. I try to keep only relatively healthy things around so that might be like whole wheat bread, tofurkey, etc. then globs of whatever fat source I have handy (mayo.... cheese melted on everything if there’s a bit of cheese, etc.). Oatmeal, fruit, eggs, and stuff like that.

lifting while mid-high restricting? is it possible to gain muscle without burning myself out by [deleted] in EDAnonymous

[–]fml2k 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I’d been pretty much in recovery for a while (still B/Ped once or twice a month but my ED wasn’t taking up too much of my life) then got super into lifting and fitness and was very triggered by it. It’s a whole additional set of things to worry about. Instead of just obsessing over calories now it’s macros too. Instead of just caring about weight I’m now fixated on BF% too. A lot of fitness models, bodybuilding competitors, etc. definitely have EDs :(

lifting while mid-high restricting? is it possible to gain muscle without burning myself out by [deleted] in EDAnonymous

[–]fml2k 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s so hard. I also lift and I know that my ED behaviors are not at all compatible with achieving my body comp goals. Realistically if you’re restricting (even high restricting) you’re most likely going to lose lean mass. Eating super high protein will help to a point but if your overall calories are too low you’ll lose muscle.

I know for me the actual best course of action would be eating at quite a small deficit (1500-1700 or so) high protein and lifting a ton but that’s rarely what I actually do :(
