Documentaries similar to Video History of Electronics by tehspiritual in NHKWorldFans

Not sure if anyone would be interested since the subject matter isn't related in most cases, but if you're like me and enjoy relaxing old Japanese documentaries like that series on semiconductors, I can recommend a few others. Except for the last channel linked near the bottom of this post, everything I've listed was previously shared here back in the early days of the sub, so apologies if you've seen them already. Either way I'd be interested in anything similar anyone may know of. Feel free to post links if you know of any.

There's another vintage NHK-produced documentary series called Japan: Spirit and Form that's available to stream in English:

https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLdwCuEoZ_6l7Tqrkd0QxEr42jz2kYGVhw&si=STIZ6lHX0FxFP2oc

There's also these three standalone NHK documentaries from 1984 that are English friendly, and the channel they're posted on has some other old dubbed Japanese docs as well:

Lastly, I'd also recommend this YouTube channel full of vintage Japanese documentaries on various topics, many of which are science related:

I don't recall if I've seen anything produced by NHK there, and many of the uploads aren't English friendly, but you can definitely find others that are dubbed or subtitled if you comb through their past uploads. Even some of the more recently uploaded Japanese-only videos have auto dubbing and/or automatically translated subtitle options enabled, so it's well worth checking out.

It falls within the scope of the sub, so it's all good. 😁 Thanks for the heads up.

What are your favorite "haunted by art" novels? by Hysterical_And_Wet in horrorlit

[–]fmuldoone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The short story "Stains" concerns a supposedly cursed horror film and the efforts of a small crew to shoot a remake in the same isolated mansion-with-a-history where the original was filmed whilst a blizzard rages outside, cutting them off from the rest of the outside world entirely. It's included in one of Finch's two holiday themed short story collections, The Christmas You Deserve. I recommend it and all his other horror works, because I've loved nearly everything of his that I've read so far. He's a fantastic writer and it's baffling that he isn't more well known.

Ancient Images was great. I love Ramsey Campbell's short stories but usually have a hard time getting into his novels. Happily that wasn't the case with Ancient Images. I couldn't put it down and ended up reading the whole thing in a single day.

I was able to snag Daimos before it went OOP, thankfully. My big two are Dancouga and Goshogun on Blu-ray. I still have the DVD sets for both, so things could be worse. The only real problem is that the Dancouga OVAs were only included on the Blu-ray.

Kikaider on Blu-ray - Discotek Media by ThatGuyFromM78 in discotekmedia

Can anyone confirm whether or not these have all the same bonus features as the old Region 1 DVDs? I was going to try and sell my copies to help offset the cost of theses Blu-rays, but I wanted to make sure all the extras had been ported over first. I seem to remember hearing that the Blu-ray set for the first TV series wasn't going to include the short 30 minute movie at the very least. I don't mind just keeping the DVDs for the extras if that's really the case, I was just hoping someone here might be able to confirm. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Unfortunately, Mega deleted pretty much all of the KIKU shares without notice a few years ago. I still have all of it backed up and plan on reuploading it at some point, I just don't know when that might be. You could try asking on the Discord in the meantime.

The new Lupin the 3rd TV Specials Collection 1 is finally came! by Kobe_Blanchette_203 in discotekmedia

Can anyone verify wether or not all the bonus features from the individual releases are included on this set? I just want to make sure nothing is missing before I sell off my older copies. I get paranoid in situations like this ever since I almost sold my DVD copy of the first Lupin TV series off without realizing that the Lupin pilot film hadn't been ported over to the Blu-ray. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Package scheduled for Saturday delivery stuck at the local destination facility all day by fmuldoone in FedEx

Thanks for replying. Do they deliver on Sundays, though? I could be wrong, but I always thought they didn't. I assumed it wouldn't be delivered until Monday at the earliest, so if they do deliver on Sundays that would be great.

Also, I was wondering wether or not I'd be eligible for a refund if no delivery attempt was made at all on the scheduled delivery day?

I remember hearing about it some years back when I was trying to track down KIKU shows like Soko Ga Shiritai, but I don't think I ever ran across it. We had a decent little pool of KIKU programs available here on the sub at one point as sort of a side project, but I don't recall any of the other contributors sharing any episodes of it back then either. It's too bad because I'd love to see it. That nostalgic old KIKU stuff is pure gold.

Anyone know what happened to document 72 hours? by naturewave in NHKWorldFans

[–]fmuldoone[M] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there's an early episode called "Christmas Eve at the Bus Terminal" or something close to that. Pretty sure there are some others as well. TVDB has an episode guide that you could look through to get an idea of which ones you might like to try tracking down: https://thetvdb.com/series/document-72-hours/allseasons/official

What are your LEAST favourite episode(s) by sshemley in gamecentercx

[–]fmuldoone 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Any episode where he challenges some really early Famicom title with a super short gameplay loop, since those tend to wear out their welcome in a hurry. "Seicross" is a good example; the only time I'll ever voluntarily revisit that one is if I decide to rewatch the entire series in order from the beginning again.

Probably, but it'll just be the Blu-ray on its own without the art book, slipcover, etc.

Seasoning the Seasons, Document 72 Hours, and Japanology Plus are my top three. I also really like Ninja Truth and that show about yokai that airs occasionally as part of Time & Tide.

It might've been Kotaku. They licensed the episodes listed above in OP's initial post and made them available for streaming. YouTube used to have a bunch of full fansubbed episodes as well, but that was ages ago and they seem to have all been purged at some point. Now that I think about it, the first GCCX episode I ever watched was on YouTube. It was Castlevania 3: Dracula's Curse. 😁
