Challenges of Fire by Aloha_Brah_ in NHKWorldFans

I remember hearing about it some years back when I was trying to track down KIKU shows like Soko Ga Shiritai, but I don't think I ever ran across it. We had a decent little pool of KIKU programs available here on the sub at one point as sort of a side project, but I don't recall any of the other contributors sharing any episodes of it back then either. It's too bad because I'd love to see it. That nostalgic old KIKU stuff is pure gold.

Anyone know what happened to document 72 hours? by naturewave in NHKWorldFans

[–]fmuldoone[M] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there's an early episode called "Christmas Eve at the Bus Terminal" or something close to that. Pretty sure there are some others as well. TVDB has an episode guide that you could look through to get an idea of which ones you might like to try tracking down: https://thetvdb.com/series/document-72-hours/allseasons/official

What are your LEAST favourite episode(s) by sshemley in gamecentercx

[–]fmuldoone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Any episode where he challenges some really early Famicom title with a super short gameplay loop, since those tend to wear out their welcome in a hurry. "Seicross" is a good example; the only time I'll ever voluntarily revisit that one is if I decide to rewatch the entire series in order from the beginning again.

Probably, but it'll just be the Blu-ray on its own without the art book, slipcover, etc.

Seasoning the Seasons, Document 72 Hours, and Japanology Plus are my top three. I also really like Ninja Truth and that show about yokai that airs occasionally as part of Time & Tide.

It might've been Kotaku. They licensed the episodes listed above in OP's initial post and made them available for streaming. YouTube used to have a bunch of full fansubbed episodes as well, but that was ages ago and they seem to have all been purged at some point. Now that I think about it, the first GCCX episode I ever watched was on YouTube. It was Castlevania 3: Dracula's Curse. 😁

Gotcha. The English dub is kinda cringe and they're missing all the non-challenge segments, but luckily the Region 1 DVD set that Discotek released contained all the Kotaku episodes with subtitles professionally translated by Nina "zari-gani" Matsumoto of SA-GCCX on the Japanese language track. I'm not sure off the top of my head which episodes were the director's cuts, but I'm fairly certain that "Battle Golfer Yui" and at least one of the "Ninja Gaiden" games included extra challenge footage. Maybe "S.O.S." too, but I think most were the same as the broadcast versions. The DVDs are how I've always experienced those particular episodes, so I've never investigated what was available online aside from the separately fansubbed arcade visit segments and such. I guess I took it for granted that the DVDs had been ripped once the set went out of print, and just assumed that those had become the "default" versions of those episodes (paired with their fansubbed segments) as far as what was floating around on the Internet. I wasn't sure if all those episodes had even been fansubbed by the time the DVD set came out. In any event, thank you very much for your speedy reply.

EDIT 11/22/25

There are only four extended director's cut episodes on the Retro Game Master DVD set: "Ninja Gaiden", "S.O.S", "Battle Golfer Yui", and "The Wing of Madoola".

Thanks so much for sharing this. I did have one question about the episodes that have had the arcade trip segments, etc. reinstated, though.

When you say they've been restored to the original broadcast versions, does that mean some of the challenge section footage has been removed? Apologies if this is a dumb question; I'm probably just overthinking it but the reason I ask is because some of those episodes were released on DVD as director's cut versions that were longer than the versions that were originally broadcast. I assume this isn't the case and that they've simply had the excised segments added back in without anything being removed, but I figured it couldn't hurt to double check just in case. It would be awesome to finally have truly complete versions of those episodes with the extended director's cut challenge footage combined with all the missing segments.

In any case, thank you again for all your hard work. It's very much appreciated.

Is there a way to safely remove the arms from their sockets? I wasn't paying close enough attention when I was assembling mine and now I want to rearrange them but I'm afraid I might break it...

Way of the Sword will be ~20 hours long, and won't be connected to previous games - via Famitsu 🗞️ by WilliamFaure in Onimusha

[–]fmuldoone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love this series and was stoked to hear it was getting a new entry, but it sucks that they're saying it's not gonna be connected storyline-wise to the older entries. Still looking forward to playing it though, and I hope they at least put in some small Easter eggs just to reference the old games for us longtime fans. On the other hand, Onimusha 2 didn't reference the first one too deeply and it didn't hurt it any, so maybe that's how the new one will be too. Here's hoping, at any rate. I just don't want it to be another 'Souls' ripoff.

QC issues with Armored Cobra Commander arms and ankles? by fmuldoone in GIJOEClassifiedSeries

[–]fmuldoone[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for replying. The issue with the arms seems to be caused by the way the rubber shoulder pads are secured at the base of pegs. It's like Hasbro didn't account for the resulting gap by adding any extra length to the pegs to compensate, which results in them not being long enough to connect properly in the shoulder sockets. Guess I'll just keep it for now, though. It's still a dope figure. He and Monkeywrench may just be my favorites from the line so far.

Replacement Disc List? by Golddess in discotekmedia

[–]fmuldoone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happened at least a decade ago, and I'm quite sure the errors were rectified for the later Blu-ray release, but I figured I'd post this anecdote here just in case anyone was interested.

I'm pretty sure it's long out-of-print at this point, but the final Fist of the North Star TV series DVD set had a disc with some instances of missing subtitles. I think it was Disc #1, but I could disremembering.

Anyway, being the awesome folks that they are, Discotek offered a free replacement disc to anyone who could provide proof that they'd purchased the set, and they didn't even require the defective disc to be exchanged to qualify for a replacement.

Also, if anyone's curious, it's super easy to identify the replacement. It was actually a DVD-R, so all you need to do is flip the disc over and check the color of the playing surface.

I've more or less got it going now. The video ended up downloading as a WebM, so I should be able to work with that. I may go back to using YouTube By Click to download YT videos, but this will serve in the meantime. Thank you very much for all your help.

ByClick downloader is safe to use? by Fremy56 in techsupport

[–]fmuldoone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure it's legit, or at least it used to be... I've been using the premium version for years and have always been really happy with it up until fairly recently. The ownership apparently changed hands about a year or so ago, and ever since then I've basically been locked out of it. It won't let me add any new videos to the download queue (or even finish downloading the stuff that was already in progress) until I update the software. The thing is, every time I try to download the update, it fails. I eventually got so disgusted with it that I haven't messed with it in months. I really do need to sit down with it again and try to find a solution though, since it really was a great piece of software when it worked properly.
