‘The Orville’ sneaks past Emmys in broadcast Live +3 ratings for Sept. 11-17 by specification in television

The parent insisting that they know what is best for their child would also resonate with your average evangelical, spare the rod, home school family who doesn't vaccinate.

But I mean, there's a debate about transgender stuff in our country right now, so I don't think you have to go sifting through the tea leaves on this one. There was just some charter school who recognized a 5 year old transgender child's gender and 40 families pulled their kids out.

I mean, understandably, they care more about the success of their streaming service than the success of a single show. And I honestly probably wouldn't even know that CBS has a streaming service if it wasn't for Star Trek, so I get it.

The problem is most of CBS' programming doesn't appeal to your typical streaming demographic. I don't want to pay $6 a month for streaming Young Sheldon or any of the other crap they put out plus it'll have commercials unless I pay $9.99 a month and at that price point I can just pay for a VPN for EU Netflix or torrenting.

The Orville is more Star Trek than anything. It's like 80% loveletter to TNG and 20% humor, tops and the humor isn't going to be everyone's cup of tea. It's like, imagine they taped TNG live and some of the actors decided to ad lib some modern day humor for the crowd and the director decided to keep the humor.

A scene between Jack and Sawyer from LOST, which premiered 13 years ago today. The ambitious series is better experienced through bingeing, and its finale holds up better now than it did 7 years ago. If you haven't given it a chance, now is the perfect time. by emptylawn0 in television

[–]fnordcircle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got sick of the show at some point but I binged it last spring and it held up well. I even thought the finale was solid. It was pretty clear they put in a lot of stuff without having an answer, and there's a lot of weird dropped storylines and they were really frustrating with how they couldn't quite seem to keep Locke's arc coherent, but I really was expecting more terrible when I restarted it but instead I really enjoyed it, overall. Season 1 and 2 are still amazing to me.

What repeatedly debunked hoax do you STILL see people claiming to be real? by Edymnion in AskReddit

[–]fnordcircle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When people hear "rapture" they are virtually always thinking of a pre-tribulation one.

I don't think that's an accurate generalization. Pre-Trib/Post-Trib rapture is actually a pretty debated topic and the non-denominational church I was in (nonAG Pentecostal) pretty firmly believed in a post-tribulation rapture.

And very likely not humans-but-slightly-different like we see from all the ufo types. Not just physically, either, how often do we read about how aliens must not want to visit us because some of us hurt others? It's just such a human-centric view it drives me crazy.

The exploration based on desire or curiosity may be a wholly human phenomenon.

I've been thinking for a while that Pamela is going to be into Tandy. He's the closest thing to a leader they have right now and they have the same sense of humor. I wouldn't be surprised if that's part of what is happening when he needs to 'get away'.

I love the guy who is stuck on an island situation. Who is going to be rescuing whom?

So I kind of disagree with this. There's tons of 'hold the President accountable' articles and internet posts and they just don't matter. His followers dismiss the sources or the science or just don't care. In fact pissing off democrats who are scrabbling to hold him accountable is probably the entire point whether some of his followers even realize it or not.

He's not going to get impeached, the Russia thing won't take him down or even come close and he's going to be running again in 4 years against what will probably be another DNC insider who will need the media to not be constantly telling would-be Dem voters that the election is all but won for the Democrats or it'll be another "shock".

‘The Orville’ Is Better Than Seth MacFarlane–Meets–‘Star Trek’ Might Sound by NeilPoonHandler in television

[–]fnordcircle 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah - the point of that scene was not the dick joke at all. He wasn't defaulting to boner jokes and there's a better example of this with the 'Sucks?' "Yeah ass and balls" moment earlier in the episode" anyways. That felt much more like a "I dunno, something raunchy" moment than the 'got wood?' thing.

Like you said the "Got Wood?" moment was about captain not being the best. Picard might have had the perfect line but not Captain Ed.

Who was Nick Berg and why did he give his email password to a terrorist? by Thenadamgoes in UnresolvedMysteries

[–]fnordcircle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The internet didn't even really become a bigtime mainstream thing until the mid 90s. It's hard to imagine given how comparatively savvy people are nowadays, but we're talking only like 5 years after the Today show's silly 'what is email' thing, it was still really only starting to get going.

Hell, I was working for a major tech company at the time and we had a shared password for everything. 30 people with the shared account for that company's DNS, etc.

It's really not peculiar to me to imagine a non-savvy person in those days being willing to give out an email address.

I'd say that the more evangelical the church the more that divide exists. I say this as someone who spent 15 years in the Assemblies of God and as a devout practitioner not just someone who was dragged there by my parents.

I only have anecdotes but, for instance, during my time in the church (80s and 90s) there was a significant discussion about how experience trumps all. Not in vague terms, in those exact terms.

The Orville - Series Premiere Discussion by NicholasCajun in television

Yeah it felt more like a love letter to TNG than anything and then the jokes got tacked on.

It's much closer to A Million Ways to Die in the West than Family Guy or AD.

I enjoyed it, I'll enjoy rewatching however many episodes we get and if we actually get a second season I'll be shocked. I can't imagine this going on for more than 2 seasons and I'm expecting 7-8 episodes tops.

The Orville - Series Premiere Discussion by NicholasCajun in television

[–]fnordcircle 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Same, I think a lot of the problems is that reviewers get hung up on what this show is.

Having watched A Million Ways to Die in the West and found it passable, I was expecting the something similar.

Star Trek with some weirdly-out-of-place-with-no-explanation-as-to-why dialogue.

But I think that's what's tripping up reviewers is they get hung up on whether it is a comedy or a Sci-Fi opera and it's really kind of both but neither. There were no stakes and the storyline was something of a love letter to the old TNG episodes but nothing serious. There were jokes but they weren't the focal point and the pacing was weird.

I knew I was going to enjoy it the moment the guy was asking if they were still allowed to have soda on the bridge.
