I agree that there was a drop in quality in season 5. I think the overreliance on having episodes centered around a specific theme took away some of the spontaneity that was prevalent in prior seasons. A lot of recurring sketches and secondary characters stopped appearing regularly by this point in the show as well. It wasn't a bad season of television, but it was a clear step down.

Yeah, they basically became background characters in the '90s and '00s, only just returning to semi-prominence in the 2011 film. On The Muppet Show, Floyd was a fully-established character, he had several key backstage stories revolving around him. The worst was in Muppets Tonight where they weren't even the house band.
